The Cost of an Open Source CMS

An Open Source Content Management System, or CMS, can often save companies money in recurring maintenance costs, but they aren't necessarily FREE. While it's true the source code is free, and you don't have to pay to use it, there are many other costs invovled such as:

  • Design - Unless you are comfortable with using a cookie-cutter free design/template, you'll probably want to hire a graphic design firm to build you a custom template
  • Implementation - With that, you'll need to have a firm take that design and properly code it for the CMS that you choose
  • Customization - We haven't found any client yet that is satisfied with an out-of-the box solution, mainly because they don't exist. Part of the charm of an open-source CMS is the ability to customize and tailor it to your exact needs
  • Maintenance - As with any web site, you can't simply put it up and forget about it. There are costs involved in monthly maintenance of the site, updates, and changes need to be made

There are many benefits to going with an Open Source CMS, one of the most notable is not being tied in to a proprietary system where you have to rely on a single organization to make changes and updates without the ability to have outside firms take on the development of your site.
