The AUGUST FEATURED PERFORMER, WENDY BORST, with her sweet soprano voice, is a long-time veteran of the Spotlight Cabaret.  She landed her spot at the Cabaret after being scouted during the open mic portion of the evening. She started singing in first grade when she was chosen to sing the “Morning Star” solo at church.  Having grown up in a household that played a variety of music it not only allowed her to develop a passion for music and singing but it was something they did as a family. Her entire family sang in choirs and her grandfather was a lifelong member of his church choir. A major plus in her life was being able to study voice privately as a child.  This, amongst other important factors, is what made Wendy choose a life and career in music.  She went on to study music in college and now is a staple in the music education of thousands of Bethlehem area students.

Growing up, Wendy developed her style by listening to performers like: Audra McDonald (who she’d love to sing a duet with), Rebecca Luker, and Kelly O’Hara.  But she says “I get inspiration from all sorts of music…from Sondheim to Brahms and Bach to Dave Matthews.”  In fact, you’ll find just about everything in her iPod – top 40, folk, patriotic, choir music, standards, showtune, and more – like I said, just about everything.  Although, Wendy sheepishly admits that she has High School Musical 1, 2, & 3 on her iPod (but in her defense she directed it at PA Playhouse, so we forgive her.)  She also says to some people it’s shocking that Wendy listens to a lot of Muse and Green Day.  She’s open to most music except for dance club music and new age.

Having fulfilled a dream of performing on the stage at Carnegie Hall she would like to repeat the experience.  It doesn’t matter with who she’s open to all possibilities.

An avid reader, Wendy ponders the idea of what it would be like if she lived a quiet life as a librarian or worked in a bookstore if she didn’t have a career in music.  But if she gave up her career in music she would never get to dabble in her dream genre of jazz.  And Wendy often has ‘voice envy for a more contemporary rock sound….Or maybe we’ll someday see Wendy on Cupcake Wars.  She is an excellent baker.  She developed her passion for baking when she was the family member assigned to bring desserts to all the family functions.

Wendy loves sharing her music with our audience because it’s a chance for her to sing songs she doesn’t get to sing on a regular basis.  It allows her to take a break from the church and school music and just sing for her. It’s helped her build her repertoire which has helped her better prepare for local theater auditions.  In the future she’d like a cabaret dedicated to the contemporary musical theater composer Jason Robert Brown or possible have a kamikaze song night where the audience picks the songs.

Well, we are proud of all the hard work Wendy has done over the past year for Star of the Day Event Productions’ SPOTLIGHT CABARET and we look forward to hearing her sing in ANYTHING GOES.
