Annual Celebration Honors Students, Volunteers & Partners

No one could quite believe the number, but it was true: Ed Boucher of Old Town has been working with and in Literacy Volunteers of Bangor for 35 years. Boucher was honored for his achievements as a student and his volunteer work at the organization’s Annual Celebration June 16. An Old Town resident, Boucher routinely speaks to new volunteers and community groups about his life before and after learning to read.

More than 150 friends of Literacy Volunteers turned out for the celebration, which also honored students, volunteers, and community partners. 78 students were honored for diligence and commitment to their studies.  45 volunteers were recognized for contributing more than 100 hours of service during the last 12 months, and 25 volunteers celebrated milestone years of service.

Matt Tardie, Adult Education Director in RSU 26 and 34, and SAD 22, received the Champion of Literacy award. His program works closely with Literacy Volunteers to deliver services, and he has been a longtime supporter of the organization.

“Matt’s philosophy of helping adults meet their educational goals is aligned with Literacy Volunteers’ values,” explains Mary Marin Lyon, Executive Director of Literacy Volunteers. “He’s a people person. He meets our students where they are and helps them go forward. His flexibility goes a long way toward helping our students become successful.”
