Room's 2011 writing contest

The first prize in each category is $500 and second prize is $250, plus publication.

The winners will be published in issue 35.2, summer 2012.

Call for submissions: Special 35th anniversary issue

JourneyOur summer 2012 issue (35.2) will feature the winning pieces from our 2011 writing contest, accompanied by other outstanding work.

Please send us your best work, on any topic, before January 31, 2012.

Please visit our submission guidelines for details, and send your work to the attention of Brigid MacAulay or Amy McCall.

Issue 34.3Our Fall issue, Fluency, will be available soon.

Our commissioned work is five new poems by Karen Solie, and Kimberly Alcock interviews Jane Urquhart.

Fluency covers writing (Linda Svendsen and Nola Poirier) and language (Madeleine Harlamovs and Marion Agnew), and our other featured writers include Fiona Tinwei Lam, Katherine Leyton, and Lynda Monaghan.

Issue 34.3Fellow Roomie Amanda Sun's debut Ink Wash has just been awarded a two-book deal with Harlequin Teen!

A sixteen-year-old orphan is uprooted to Japan and crosses paths with her school's arrogant kendo star whose drawings come to life in dangerous ways, pushing them both into Japan's paranormal underworld.

Welcoming a new Roomie

Jade McGregorJade was born and raised in Steveston, BC. She is a psychology major, research assistant, and founding member of Psi Chi International Honour Society in Psychology at UBC.

She is also a journalist for the UBC newsletter Psyched! and an associate editor for the UBC Undergraduate Research Journal.

Struck by Room's commitment to celebrating women's strength and sensitivity, and by the prospect of learning about editing and working with this collective of wonderfully accomplished women, she seized the opportunity to join Room.
