Dear <<First Name>>,

See also Update on Ballot and Clash with English Schools Championships below.

Course map, timetable and directions/arrangements for the second Gwent League fixture at Parc de Pugh, Brecon are now on the website.  As with many of our fixtures, parking will be limited (and in several different locations), so do please study the directions, share lifts where possible, arrive early and be prepared to walk.  Remember that no dogs are allowed at this fixture, and heed road closures due to Remembrance Sunday outlined in the directions.

Registration, Payments and Expensese

Registration will be as for the first fixture, i.e. please simply drop off your forms and pick up envelopes.  There are no numbers to be worn at this fixture.

Payments should be made by one person for each club, to cover all fees due for the first and (guestimated) second fixture, plus league affiliation fees (£15 per club for juniors only/universities, otherwise £25). We'll be keeping separate tallies for each club this season, and will declare final reconcilliations at the end.  You can pay by:

  • BACS (Gwent Cross Country League, Sort 51-61-15, A/C, 11023775, Nat West, Reference <Club Name> FEES). Please send a confirmation email (including club name and amount paid) to e.r.sherwood@btinternet.com.
  • Cheque by post to Roland Sherwood, Glenside, Clarbeston Road, Pembrokeshire SA63 4SD.  If not drawn from a club account, please write the club name on the back.
  • Dropping off a cheque on the day (details to follow, club name as above).

We're in the process of collating the numbers of runners from each club, and will publish these to help you once we have them.  Clubs who previously used prepaid accounts please make payments as above, we'll work out a reconciliation at a later date.
Any Guests should pay by cash on the day, but these will be the only cash payments allowed!

Expenses for qualified officials will be available for collection on the day, and will include expenses for the first match (details to follow).

Helpers Needed

We're still short of at least one helper (preferably two) to assist with registration.  If you can get to Brecon for 9:45am, and could give 2 hours of your time, please contact me.  The league relies on volunteers to make things happen, and at the moment we are short of 'regulars'.

League T-Shirts and Medals from the 2019-20 Season

Subject to having enough helpers (as above), these will be available for collection on the morning of the race.  Both T-Shirts and Medals will be available from the same table, which will be near (but not combined with) the registration desks.

Covid-19

Please continue to observe good hand hygiene and wear masks indoors for the protection of our volunteers.  You may wish to bring small plastic bags (which will again also be available at reception) so that you don't need to handle disks passed over from sweaty athletes.  That is your decision (when processing the results we avoid touching the disks for 48 hours to allow any virus to decay).

Ballot on Linking Senior Distances

Just when you thought it couldn't have been closer, it was!  After adding in a stray vote the result of the ballot on linking senior distances was a draw at 13 each. This does not change the result because in order to effect change a proposal must win a ballot. Consequently the status quo situation will remain for the rest of the 2021/22 season.

The current women’s distance (5800m – 7000m) was set in order to encourage participation in women’s running (as allowed under the 2010 Equality Act).  However, since that distance was established a long while ago, we will need to re-confirm it at the 2022 AGM, and will make and take alternative proposals in advance of that meeting.

Final Fixture Clash with the English Schools Championships

The dates for this winter's league fixtures were based on those recommended by UK Athletics.  However, the final fixture clashes with the English Schools Cross-Country Championships, a very popular event for many juniors, and not what we intended.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to change the date of this fixture, so for this season we will change individual junior scoring format (3 of first 4 plus last fixture) to "best 4 out of 5" to score for juniors.  Junior teams and seniors will continue with all 5 fixtures counting.

This may mean that we won't be able to present medals to juniors on the day of the final race.  In future we'll treat 'UK Recommended League Dates' with more caution!

Regards,
Neil
