President's Note

Dear Friends,

I was recently listening to a talk from Bill Ford, the president of Ford Motor Company, at a TED Conference that took place in 2011. Mr. Ford indicates that there are around 6.8 billion people in the world, with an estimated 800 million cars. It is anticipated that by the year 2044 we will reach between 2 to 4 billion cars as the population increases.

Mobility will be severely impacted. Today in the USA, many drivers have commutes that take about an hour. In Beijing, China some commutes take up to five hours for a round trip to work and back. Obviously if your commute is difficult today, just imagine what it will be like as we approach a number of cars that more than doubles the current amount. There are many ways that humanity is dealing with it on the pollution side; hybrid engines, electric cars, improved mileage, driver-less cars, shared cars and shared rides. As Mr. Ford notes, the mobility model we have is not working: a traffic jam with electric cars is still a traffic jam.
Mr. Ford advocates for smart cars, smart roads, smart parking, smart public transportation. The world needs an integrated system that will suit the profiles of each user. Obviously there isn't a single solution that will solve our mobility problems; however monorails used either as a backbone system like it is being done in Tokyo, Japan, Chongqing,China, and Daegu, Korea, or as feeders to underground metros like in Sao Paulo, Brazil with Line 15 can be part of the solution with their competitive development cost and speedy construction.

At the International Monorail Association we invite you to a workshop, that takes place in Wuppertal, Germany this September 19th-22nd, to work on the performance specifications for monorails.
While at the conference we will get to see the Wuppertal Suspended Railway, one of the first monorails in the world that started operations in 1901; that makes it a century long operation that now moves nearly 30 million passengers per year. For those of us attending Innotrans in Berlin, this event will take place from September 23rd-26th.

Come to Monorailex 2014 and become part of the future in transportation.

On behalf of the Executive Council,

Carlos Banchik, P.E.
