President's Note

Dear Friends,

Another successful event is behind us. The 6th annual gathering, organized by the International Monorail Association, was held in Wuppertal, Germany this past September.

The IMA would like to thank each and every delegate who took the time to attend the sessions. A special thanks to those representing monorail operating agencies for attending these sessions:  Dr. Ahn and Mr. Jeon from Daegu Metropolitan Urban Railroad Agency; Mr. Kumar, from the Mumbai Metropolitan Development Authority; Mrs. Gramani and Mr. Silveira, from Metro São Paulo.

During the meeting, we heard from three monorail operators about the progress of their systems: Daegu, Korea; Mumbai, India; São Paulo, Brazil. The Daegu system will start revenue operation in 2015, and they are currently in test and commissioning phase.  The Mumbai monorail started operation of the first phase (8 km), and they expect opening the 11 km by 2016. The São Paulo line 15 project started operations between the first two stations. By 2016, the second phase, including 13 km of revenue line already built and 8 stations, is expected to be complete. All three projects are working through checklists of items to debug, as it is common on systems of this complexity.
Later during the meetings, the delegates created three groups to start work on the basis for Performance Specifications for Monorails. The idea was to create a single document that can serve as a reference for future projects based on the experiences gathered to date around the world.

After the meeting in Wuppertal, many delegates went to Innotrans in Berlin, where we witnessed the unveiling of an Innovia 300 Bombardier monorail train destined to the King Abdullah Financial District. The two car train is similar to the one currently in operation in São Paulo, Brazil.

The work that started in Wuppertal will require the aid of more people that were not able to attend this first meeting, however we will be outreaching to them in the near future to incorporate their valuable input into the Performance Specifications.

The labor of the technical sessions was coordinated and managed by a group of volunteers, who we would like to recognize for their efforts in getting things prepared for Wuppertal: Mr. Peter Keller and Martin Kaufmann from Derap Switzerland; Mr. Peter Timan, Tim Dickson, Tim Zhang, from Bombardier Transportation; Mr. AK Das, from Louis Berger Group-India. Without their help the sessions wouldn’t have been able to offer the quality of workshop that was offered.

Lastly, I would like to publicly acknowledge the work of one of our founders, our Association Executive Secretary, Mr. Jaap Ketel who will retire from the Association at the end of the year.  Jaap, together with his wife Iemeke have been instrumental in running the day to day operation of the Association as well as the events.

On behalf of the Executive Council,

Carlos Banchik, P.E.

Evacuation Testing Starts in
Daegu, South Korea

Daegu Monorail does not have emergency walkways, yet all trains feature 'Spiral Shooter' escape slides for the rare possibility of an extreme emergency situation. Daegu Metro plans to test the system throughout this coming winter due to concerns resulting from a major snowstorm that occurred in March of 2010.

Worth Considering

Many of us are familiar with Wikipedia and how it has become the clearing house of information for many facets in our lives. As most of you know, Wikipedia is supported and hosted by the non-profit Wikipedia Foundation. In our transportation world, the Monorail Society, an all-volunteer organization with its website www.monorails.org, has become our clearing house. New projects and ideas, facts about existing projects, construction photos and many more things, all get a place at the familiar website.
  • How many times people have enquired you about things they have read at www.monorails.org?
  • How many times have we referred people to look into the Monorail Society’s website www.monorails.org?
  • How many times have you sent information to Mr. Kim Pedersen, the Society President, related to projects you have worked on, or projects you have seen?
  • How many times have you been able to point with pride to colleagues, friends and family, projects you have been involved displayed at the website?
If you answered yes to any of the previous questions, this might be a good time to support the labor of the Society by becoming a member and better yet if you can, donate to it if you have not done that to date. It is through the support of all of us that this Society can continue to thrive and be there when we need it, it is only fair.
