A short history of Glamping
The term Glamping entered the English vocabulary in late 2007. Glamping is basically 'glamorous camping'. You can glamp in pods, yurts, tipis, wigwams, bell tents, hobbit holes, shepherds' huts, vintage caravans, safari tents, treehouses, etc, etc.
Ian Bone was perhaps the pioneer of glamping. He developed the very first Camping Pod and has remained the largest Pod manufacturer ever since. His Lake District company, Newfoundland Lodges, supplies Pods all over the world. George Clarke's TV programme, "Amazing Spaces", has also done much to bring Glamping into the public eye over the last couple of years.
Here at The Quiet Site we bought our first Camping Pods in 2007, right at the beginning of the glamping revolution. We now have 14 Camping Pods and sell more Pod nights than any other site in the UK.
In 2010 we introduced the very popular Bell Tent. They are much larger than the Camping Pods and have an electric light, charge points and a sewn in ground sheet. They are erected in May and come down in September, and have proved very popular with larger families as they provide masses of space.
In 2015 we introduced our first Hobbit Hole which was an immediate subterranean success! Large covered decks, huge soft sleep ledges, separate WC's and an amazing view over the Ullswater valley make these the ultimate glamping unit.
Below is a description of the glamping options available at The Quiet Site.

Camping Pods - the popular original
We have had Camping Pods here at The Quiet Site since 2007. They are ideal for two adults and two small children. The humble camping pod is still as popular now as it was ten years ago. Simple in design they include a heater, light and charge points. A great introduction into the world of glamping!
Camping Pods offer:
~ Wooden deck with BBQ stone
~ Heater (two in winter!)
~ Light and electric charge point
~ Parking place close by
~ Great view
Bell Tents - large and airy
The Quiet Site Bell Tents, which were introduced in 2010, offer spacious accommodation and hence are popular with families. They are 5 meters in diameter and boast an internal area of 20 square meters.
There is no insulation in the walls so we only erect them between May Day and the end of September when it is, we hope(!), warmer. They come with a mains electric light and household charging sockets. We renew the tents every couple of years - keep an eye on our Facebook page for second hand bargains!
Bell Tents offer:
~ Electric light
~ Charge points
~ Adjacent Parking
~ Great view
Hobbit Holes - the ultimate solution?
The Quiet Site has been granted planning permission to build 10 Hobbit Holes. The first two are now finished and are being let. All the exterior work has been completed for the next four and all 10 be ready for occupation in the summer. Half the Hobbit Holes will be dog friendly.
Each has a separate WC and basin, a large soft sleep ledge, lots of seating, hooks, deck chairs, a picnic table and a fabulous view.
A Hobbit Hole comprises:
~ Large inside area (15 sqr m) with soft sleep ledge
~ WC and basin
~ Games table
~ Multiple lighting
~ Numerous electrical points and USB sockets
~ Water tap and drain
~ Secure, lockable front door
~ Excellent insulation so that it's warm in the winter and cool in the summer
~ Large covered outside deck to cook, chill and relax, whatever the weather
~ Picnic table and deck chairs outside
~ Parking place close by
~ Incredible view!
