So Local, It's Spooky
We're a stop on the Treat Trail! Bring your little witches and warlocks to trick or treat at the store during the Downtown Davis Business Association's Annual Halloween Treat Trail, Monday 10/31 2pm— 4:30pm.
Vote On Your Co-op's Future
October is National Co-op Month, and your Co-op needs your vote! Owners may use the ballot mailed to them, or they may vote in the store by November 18. (Look for a big black ballot box by the registers, and encourage your fellow Owners to exercise their right to uphold Co-operative Principle #2, Democratic Member Control!) What's on the ballot? Proposition 1 would allow the fiscal year to be determined by the Board of Directors in consultation with the Co-op’s General Manager, chief financial officer and in accordance with federal and state regulations. Proposition 2 would update the bylaws relating to elections and allow for the possibility of electronic voting, in conformance with California corporate law. Click here for details!
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Co-op
The Davis Food Co-op gives back to their Owners with a Patronage Refund in profitable years. And year after year, Co-op Owners (YOU) give back to Davis! Between February and September, over $1000 in Patronage Refunds were donated to youth arts organizations. The Davis School Arts Foundation, the Davis Arts Center's scholarship fund, and Acme Theater Company (pictured, jumping for joy over their giant check) are the recipients this year. We are proud of our community, and moved by your generosity. Thank you, Co-op!
Co-ops Build A Better World
"Our cooperative garnered over $17 million in sales last year, with all our profits either returned to our members or reinvested in the Co-op. Those dollars (as well as the salaries and wages we paid, plus our purchases from nearby farmers and suppliers) circulate close to home, helping to provide more jobs and tax revenue while strengthening the local economy." Thanksgiving Made Simple
Just like every year, we'll have everything you need for a perfect holiday (including our count-down on social media). Look for freshly baked pies from our Deli, awesome organic produce, Tofurky gravy and other delicious plant-based alternatives. And we'll have all the stuffing you can eat, and our usual selection of super-fresh, local, free range turkeys—available spatchcocked or split by our butchers at no extra charge (just call and give our Meat Department a heads-up at 530-758-2667, ext 138). The only change? We've done away with our turkey reservation system. This year, you needn't pre-order a thing. Our fresh birds will be available starting the Friday before Thanksgiving: first-come, first served.
Nog Nation
It's about that time. (Alright, it's a little early. But.) To kick off Nog Watch 2016, we've included this dairy-free nog in our Owner Extras for the month. Check out over 20 products that Members/Owners/Shareholders receive at 20% off our already awesome prices in October! Ask any cashier for a flier to see the full list, and look for the yellow "Owner Extras" signs. And check out our Weekly Specials while you're at it! Seasonal and fresh.
You'd Be Surprised...
Co-ops are all around us. But plenty of people don't know what it means to be an Owner, or why they might want to become an Owner and shareholder. This is the month to tell them! (October is Co-op Month, you may have heard.) Not only do our Owners vote on co-op issues, they get a say in how the co-op works and where it spends its money. And when the co-op turns a profit, Owners may be eligible for a patronage refund. At the Davis Food Co-op, we've got Owner Extras (special prices for Members only) and the occasional giant coupon (like the one in your Special Election mailer, good for up to $30 off), which add up quickly to exceed your annual investment. Plus, you get to play a part in a vibrant community resource. It's a win-win, really. So share the good news, and help us grow!
Co+op Basics: Bringing Organics To Everyone
If you haven't already entered to win, ask any cashier for an entry form! You could win a shopping cart full of over $100 in delicious organic groceries. We'll draw a winner on November 1. Meanwhile, if you're shopping on a budget, don't forget to check out our bright purple "Basics" tags throughout the store. Organics for everyone! Need a little coaching? Now through the end of the month, we're offering Budget Tours for anyone interested in shopping on a shoestring and maximizing deliciousness. Tuesdays and Thursdays through October; tours meet at 5:30pm in front of the tomato sculpture on our patio.

Hello, 21st Century! (...Hello?)
On October 5, we completed the first step in a major upgrade of our phone system. One of the most important duties of our General Manager, per Board Policy B4: Budgeting and Financial Condition, is to operate the company in a sound and prudent manner, at all times acting to protect the solvency and long term financial health of the cooperative. The switch to our new Comcast phone system represents a savings of approximately $3200 per month, or $38,400 per year. Thank you for your patience in the (challenging) short term, while we continue to implement the system that brings us this substantial reduction to our operating costs! Comcast is helping us through the final steps; we expect to be finished with the upgrade on November 1.
