Growing Bolder

Kyle and Robert Masson
The celebration of Father’s Day is observed all over the world, and in the United States, is marked on the third Sunday of every June. (That's this weekend!)

There are more than 70 million fathers in the U.S., and while experts estimate that Americans will spend more than $1 billion this year on gifts, the fathers we talk to say it’s not the things that they remember, but the bonding experiences.

The Masson family has an extra reason to celebrate in 2018. Dr. Robert Masson, Growing Bolder’s medical director and the founder of the Masson Spine Institute, will once again be racing with his son Kyle in the IMSA Prototype Challenge (MPC class), sharing the No. 11 Masson Spine Institute Elan DP02 car.
Their first race together will be on July 8, in Toronto, and the two will actually switch out during the race. The partnership means that Dr. Masson now has an even better shot at winning the championship.

For 40 years, Gary Stratton specialized in restoring Porsches until his son Jason recognized a growing trend and started restoring the iconic VW microbus. Now, it's a booming business. Hitch a ride back in time with the Strattons.
For decades, the father-son duo of Team Hoyt -- father Dick and son Rick -- competed in running races and triathlons. They did it in spite of the fact, or perhaps because of the fact, that Rick couldn’t talk, walk or use his arms or legs.
Born without a right hand, Jim Abbott become an all-star baseball athlete, even throwing a big league no-hitter for the New York Yankees. Find out how he and his father developed his unique throwing method and why his parents remain his biggest heroes, especially now that he’s a dad himself.
In a conversation with Growing Bolder, Marlo Thomas reflected on the legacy of her father, Danny Thomas, and how his example taught Marlo and her siblings how to make a difference in the world around them. And she shares tips for overcoming what holds many people back from chasing dreams -- fear.

Two years ago this week, 49 people lost their lives in the massacre at Orlando's Pulse nightclub. Speaking to hundreds of people this week, the club's owner told shooting survivors and the families of the victims:
"You are never alone."
Togetherness has been the message every since that dark day in 2016, and we spoke about it with Orlando's Official Ambassador of Love Donna Dowless.
We would also like to take a moment to acknowledge the recent death of chef, author, and Emmy Award-winning television personality Anthony Bourdain. That news broke just days after the death by suicide of entrepreneur and designer Kate Spade.

Nearly 45,000 Americans ages 10 or older killed themselves in 2016. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the U.S. suicide rate increased 25 percent from 1999 to 2016. And the rise is steep among men and women age 45-65.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the country. We can all help prevent suicide. Reach out to friends and loved ones. And if you're having suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Help is available 24 hours a day.

You are worth fighting for.
