October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the abilities of people with Down syndrome. And we can think of no better person to celebrate than Elyse Mundelein.

She was born with Down syndrome but has never let that slow her down. She’s an advocate for Down syndrome awareness, is a teaching assistant at a university and holds two part-time jobs.

The last thing she had time for was a major health crisis, but suddenly, Elyse found herself in a fight for her life. What happened next is a true story of Surviving and Thriving.

Congratulations to scientist John B Goodenough for winning a Nobel prize at 97! Goodenough and two colleagues won the 2019 Nobel Prize in chemistry for their contributions to the development of lithium-ion batteries. Goodenough is the oldest person to ever win a Nobel Prize.

"Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized our lives since they first entered the market in 1991," the Nobel Foundation said in a statement. "They have laid the foundation of a wireless, fossil fuel-free society, and are of the greatest benefit to humankind." At the age of 97, Goodenough continues to work daily, developing new polymers and battery concepts with researchers in his lab at the University of Texas.

Just a few years ago, Roderick Sewell was a homeless teenager with no legs who was failing school. Today, he’s a world-class athlete, he’s the first in his family to graduate college and he just made history, becoming the first above-the-knee double amputee to complete a Ironman, the 140-mile triathlon considered the world’s most grueling race.

Roderick says he’s so much more than “just a guy with no legs,” and he wants people to know that they, too, can overcome any obstacle in their own lives. Watch this story and see how Roderick overcame challenge after challenge but never gave up his will to succeed.
