GROWING BOLDER AT THE

A record 13,712 athletes from nearly every state in America traveled to Albuquerque, N.M. to participate in the 2019 National Senior Games, presented by Humana. Records were set. Inspiration was delivered. Friends were made. And Growing Bolder's team of reporters, including Marc Middleton, Bill Shafer and three-time Olympic gold medalist Rowdy Gaines, was there to capture all the moments that made this event so special. See what makes this event unlike anything else in the world and get inspired to start running down your own dreams, at any age and stage of your life.
Watch some of our favorite moments from the National Senior Games
We were honored to meet men and women from across the country at the National Senior Games, and we're proud to share to their stories. In the coming months, stay tuned for even more great stories, but first, we want you to meet some very special people. Click on each of their names below to watch their stories. (Clockwise from top left):
  1. Julia "Hurricane" Hawkins was perhaps the biggest star and story at the Games. The 103-year-old ran her way into the history books and into hearts everywhere.
  2. When the gun sounded in the women's 55-59 800 meter run, Alicia Antoinette took off. She ran away from the field and then somehow found the strength to hang on, smashing the National Senior Games record by over 7 seconds. What makes her story amazing is that she didn't begin running competitively until she turned 50.
  3. You might have known that Pat Boone is a singer, actor, TV host, producer, songwriter, author, motivational speaker, TV pitchman, radio personality, record company head, TV station owner, sports team owner, family man, and humanitarian. You probably didn't know that, at 85 years old, he's also a basketball player competing in the National Senior Games.
  4. She was obese, blind and deathly afraid of the water. It was determination that got Vivian Stancil to the National Senior Games. Her takeaway? Don't fear what's in your heart.

In the most recent issue of Growing Bolder Magazine, Growing Bolder Founder/CEO Marc Middleton wrote about our love for masters sports; and, spoiler alert, it has very little to do with the sport itself. Our interest is grounded in our belief that a shared passion for life, expressed through activities that require movement, dedication, socialization and focus is the surest path to health and well-being and the most effective path to recovery. Recovery from what? Anything. Everything. It really doesn’t matter.
