Richard “The Hammer” Lilien has been hitting it extra hard at the gym as he prepares for the competition of his life.
A freak accident left the 90-year-old World War II Army veteran as a quadriplegic and he now lives full time in a Florida spinal cord injury center. But that isn't stopping him from going for the gold at the National Veterans Golden Age Games this May. He'll be competing alongside 850 veteran athletes from more than 40 states.
The Hammer is hoping to take part in bocce ball, shuffleboard, air rifle and bowling competitions and has dedicated himself to training, even as he works on fundraising for his trip.
