FORGET THE BUCKET LIST:
GET BUSY ON YOUR BALANCE LIST

You’ve of course heard of bucket lists. Those are the lists of things to do and places to see before one, well, kicks the bucket. Martha Cole knows a lot about making dreams come true. She’s been on a safari in Africa, hiked the tallest mountain in the world outside the Himalayas and completed dozens of triathlons, including the grueling Ironman. But Martha says none of those adventures and accomplishments matter if she’s not giving back to the world around her.

“I wouldn’t feel very good just going through life crossing things off my bucket list if I didn’t balance it with spending a lot of time helping other people,” she says. “It’s all about the balance. And I’m loving my life.”

That’s why she’s spent more than 20 years volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. Even today, at the age of 76, you can find her most days nailing down shingles to roofs under the sweltering Florida sun. Find out what she wants everyone to know about giving back and why she considers this the best time of her life.

MORE FUN WAYS TO ENJOY LIFE AND GROW THIS SUMMER

Do you love hitting the lake in the summer? So do the Jersey Boys, a group of barefoot water skiiers ranging in age from their mid-50s to late-70s. Their backgrounds are varied but their goal is the same: to keep Growing Bolder.
Growing Bolder's Wendy Chioji loves to tell people to just say yes to adventures, so this summer, she's practicing what she preaches. She explains how rewarding it can be to open your mind and heart to possibilities.
Ask Greg Crawford what he did on summer vacation and you'll get a terrific story about a guy who knew he couldn't help find a cure for a rare children's disease in the lab so he created a way he could help -- by putting in 8 hours a day on a bike.
Ann Kahl is in her 80s, and loves to run. She also lives in Florida, home of endless, sweltering summers. She says people try to find too many excuses to skip workouts, so she wrote a book to inspire herself -- and her friends -- to keep moving all year long.
