Joe Kittinger Mentors Adventurer Felix Baumgartner in Quest to Make History
In the summer of 1950, U.S. Air Force Col. Joe Kittinger rode a balloon to the edge of space ... and jumped out. It was an event that stunned the world and made Joe an international aviation icon. Thanks to his bold experiment, scientists discovered ways to save the lives of generations of military pilots. In the process, Kittinger set several world records that have stood for more than 50 years ... until now.

This morning, Austrian adventurer Felix Baumgartner will take man back to the edge of space as part of the Red Bull Stratos mission, and he will have one VIP on his team -- Kittinger. He is with Baumgartner in New Mexico (the two are pictured above the day before the scheduled launch), lending the experience and expertise that no one else can. After all, he's the only man in the world who's been there.

You can watch the launch LIVE this morning at 6:30 a.m. MDT/8:30 a.m. EDT by visiting (note: the time is subject to change). As Baumgartner skydives from 120,000 feet, 35 cameras will be broadcasting all of the action back to Earth.

Before Baumgartner has his turn, take a few moments and watch our story commemorating the 50th anniversary of Joe's jump and learn just how awe-inspiring and dangerous this mission was then ... and now.
