Mentoring Monthly
The days are getting longer, spring is almost in the air and there’s no rest for the Mentoring Monthly team when there are mentor networking events to be covered and good news stories to share from the world of mentoring.
We’ve helped to get the ball rolling on some new mentoring relationships this month with the first of our Meet a Mentor events, and you’ll find all the details and feedback from both mentors and business owners in this newsletter. Next up, we’ve got a host of other events nationwide to share with you, including a special session to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March. And should you need any more incentive to get out there and build a mentoring relationship, we’ve got a selection of fantastic case studies from mentees and mentors. They have been sharing their thoughts on the role mentoring can play in supporting a new or growing enterprise.
If you have yet to find the right entrepreneur to work with, check out below a few ways to find mentoring opportunities across the country, plus information about specific opportunities in Devon and Staffordshire.
Mentor case study: Tripti Gyan
Chartered Physiotherapist Tripti Gyan set up her business in Nottingham four years ago. She says that her dedicated mentors “nurtured” her from clinician to entrepreneur. Now, she can’t wait to pay forward the wisdom she’s taken from her experiences to the next generation of start-ups. Read more here.
Sarah Praise
An interview with Sarah Praise
Mentee Sarah Praise found herself in the unusual position of looking for a mentor to support her in setting up her own coaching and mentoring service for women. She spoke to Mentoring Monthly about the confidence she’s been given by her two mentors, and how volunteer mentoring provided through the Get Mentoring scheme has inspired her to provide some of her mentoring service for free. Read on here.
BIS needs you
The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) are conducting a short survey for small and medium sized businesses which they hope you will be able to spend a few moments completing. The survey is designed to help Government understand the wider sources of advice and support used by business and help inform future policy. If you're happy to help, complete the survey here by Monday 4th March.
Mentoring in action: Twists Pasta
Entrepreneurs Jeffrey Postlethwaite and Adam Thompson set up Twists Pasta Bar, a fast food restaurant with a difference in September 2011. But the University of Huddersfield students explained to Mentoring Monthly that making their healthy eatery a success owes a lot to the "invaluable" support of business mentors. Read the interview with them and their current mentor, Janet Marshall, here.
Claire Faulkner
Mentor case Study: Claire Faulkner
Claire Faulkner from West Yorkshire works for Styles and Wood, a property construction, fit out and support services provider in Manchester. Having benefited from mentoring throughout her career, Claire believes that people courageous enough to take the leap into self-employment deserve the time and support of other entrepreneurs. Find out more from her here.
