Pre-trial Detention & Detention Renewal 

Detention renewal for 70 years old journalist Mohammed Saad Khattab 

On 1 January 2024, the Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed the detention of journalist Mohammed Saad Khattab Heggy, pending case No. 2063 of 2023 on charges of joining a seditious group, spreading false news, and misusing social media. Mohammed Saad Khattab is 71 years old and has coronary artery insufficiency (which required him to install 4 stents), high blood pressure and diabetes. He has plates and screws in one of his feet and is in need of periodic medical follow-ups and daily treatment. 


Journalist Badr Mohammed Badr completes 81 months behind bars 

On 1 January 2024, journalist Badr Mohammed Badr completed 81 months behind bars in pretrial detention. He was first arrested on 30 March 2017 on charges of joining an illegal group aiming at disrupting state institutions. Overall, he has now spent over 6 years in prison. 


 Journalist Mohammed Saeed Fahmy completes 67 months in prison 

On 1 January 2024, journalist Mohammed Saeed Fahmy completed 67 months in pre-trial detention, under several cases, since his arrest in May 2018. Demands for his release, alongside other 20 journalists, are increasing.  


Detention renewal for YouTuber Ahmed Sameh in Alexandria 

On 1 January 2024, The State Security Prosecution renewed the detention of Ahmed Sameh Hafnawi Barakat in Case No. 2284 of 2023, for posting a video on the killing of Jewish tourists in Alexandria. 


Detention renewal for journalist Mustafa Al-Khatib and publisher Ismail El-Kemary 

On 2 January 2024, The First Circuit Terrorism at Cairo Criminal Court, convened in Badr Prison, renewed detention of Journalist Mustafa Al-Khatib who is serving his fifth year in prison pending Case No. 488 of 2019. El Kemary is also defendant in Case No. 810 of 2019. 


Ahmed Jika’s detention was renewed for another 15 days 

On 4 January 2024, Banha Public Prosecution renewed the detention of activist Ahmed Hamdi Al-Sayed Suleiman, known as “Ahmed Jika,” for a period of 15 days pending Case No. 3117 of 2023. 


Journalist Mohammed Saeed Fahmy completes 67 months in pre-trial detention 

On 4 January 2024, journalist Mohammed Saeed Fahmy completed 67 months behind bars since his arrest in May 2018, on several cases, the most recent of which is Case No. 955 of 2020. Demands for his release, alongside other 20 journalists, are increasing. 


Extension of Ahmed Abdelmegeed Orabi's detention for 45 days 

On 9 January 2024, the Criminal Court (Second Circuit Terrorism) extended the detention of Ahmed Abdelmegeed Orabi for 45 days, under his second case, No. 2094 of 2022. Orabi lost one of his eyes during the incidents on Mohamed Mahmoud Street. After having served a year and a half in prison, he was re-arrested in November 2022, facing charges of spreading false news and using online platforms for terrorist activities. 


Extension of the detention of student Oqba Hashad for 45 days, and persisting in denying him healthcare 

On 9 January 2024, during his latest court appearance at Shebin El-Kom Court, Oqba attended without his prosthetic limb, hopping on one foot, and appearing extremely fatigued. Despite this, his detention was renewed for 45 days pending further investigation. Oqba Hashad has been arbitrarily held without trial for over four years and six months solely due to his brother Amr Hashad's human rights activism. During his detention, he was forcibly disappeared for 77 days and subjected to severe torture, including beatings, electric shocks, and suspension in contorted positions. Despite his amputated right leg above the knee since childhood, authorities at Wadi Natroun Prison, where he is held, persistently deny him proper healthcare, including replacing his artificial leg after it broke in August 2022. 


Extension of poet Galal Al-Behairi's imprisonment for 45 days 

On 9 January 2024, the Criminal Court (Second Circuit Terrorism) of the Cairo Criminal Court extended the imprisonment of poet Jalal Al-Behairi for an additional 45 days, pending investigations in Case No. 2000 of 2021. This is the third case against Al-Behairi, who was arrested for criticising the president in the song "Balaha". Al-Buhairi reported deliberate harassment by the administration of the Correction and Rehabilitation Center in Badr 1, claiming they removed his books, papers, and supplies from his cell. 

 

Extension of Sherif El-Roubi's detention for 45 days 

On 10 January 2024, The Criminal Court (Second Circuit Terrorism) prolonged Sherif El-Roubi's detention for an additional 45 days, pending investigations in Case No. 1634 of 2022. El-Roubi, who recently suffered severe inflammation of the seventh nerve, faced challenges in receiving adequate medical attention. Despite court orders, the prison administration rejected his transfer to the prison hospital and visits to a specialist. 

 

Extension of journalist Manal Agrama's detention for 45 days 

On 10 January 2024, The Criminal Court (Second Circuit Terrorism) decided to extend the detention of journalist Manal Agrama for 45 days, pending investigations in Case No. 1893 of 2022. Despite calls for her release, Agrama remains in prison, facing health issues and mourning the recent death of her father. 


Extension of the detention of Ahmed El-Tohamy, Assistant Professor of Political Science for 45 days 

On 10 January 2024, The Criminal Court (Second Circuit Terrorism) renewed the detention of Ahmed El-Tohamy, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Alexandria University, for 45 days, pending investigations in Case No. 649 of 2020. 


Journalist Medhat Ramadan begins his 43rd month in pretrial detention 

On 14 January 2024, Journalist Medhat Ramadan entered his fourth year in pretrial detention in Case No. 680 of 2020.  

Trials, Sentences & Rotations

Mohammed Ramadan Asr sentenced to 45 days in prison 

On 2 January 2024, Mohammed Ramadan Asr has been placed in detention for 45 days following the ruling of the Criminal Court (First Circuit, Terrorism Felons), under Case No. 1976 of 2023. Asr is charged with offenses linked to the content of TikTok videos discussing economic conditions and power outages. 


Christian activist Rifaat Nashed arrested in Menoufia 

On 3 January 2024, Kirolos Rifaat Nashed was surprised when he went to Menouf Police station in Menoufia to file a report, that there was an arrest warrant in Case No. 115 of 2023. The Public Prosecution brought 5 false accusations against him for “Violating family principles and values of the Egyptian society, violating the sanctity of private life, and using the telephone and means of communication to abuse others.” 


Third postponement of the case of former potential presidential candidate Ahmed Tantawi 

On 9 January 2024, the Matareya Misdemeanours Court decided to adjourn to 6 February the hearing for the 23 individuals processed under Case No. 2255 of 2023, known as the "Tantawi Authorizations Case,".  The defendants’ imprisonment was prolonged, and they were denied access to the case file.  


Journalist Medhat Ramadan begins his 43rd month in pretrial detention 

On 14 January 2024, Journalist Medhat Ramadan began his fourth year in pretrial detention in Case No. 680 of 2020. He was arrested in May 2020. 

Prison Conditions: Death in Detention & Deprivation of Healthcare 

Death of former parliamentarian Adel Radwan inside Badr prison 

On 1 January 2024, Former parliamentarian Adel Radwan Othman Mohammed is the first HRD who died in prison in 2024. He had previously obtained an acquittal from all charges on 23 August 2020, but was then arrested again on the same charges pending case No. 1513 of 2022. In October 2022, he was transferred to Badr Prison 3, where his health condition deteriorated significantly, until his death inside his prison cell. 


 Death of Lawyer Mohammed El-Sherbiny Ali El-Sayed in Badr prison 

On 6 January 2024, Lawyer Mohammed El-Sherbiny Ali El-Sayed died inside his prison cell in Badr Prison after he was transferred there in order to be tested for several diseases, including malignant tumours. He was arrested three years ago and imprisoned pending Case No. 58 of 2020. Due to medical negligence throughout his imprisonment, his health condition deteriorated, and ultimately led to his death. 


 Death of Taha Ahmed Heiba in Badr prison  

On 12 January 2024, 32 years old prisoner Taha Ahmed Heiba, died on Friday, inside his prison cell in Badr Prison 1. Arrested in 2019, Heiba’s health condition had deteriorated significantly in recent months, after he was diagnosed with cancer. Despite his family submitted petitions and appeals to the Prison Service and the Egyptian authorities in recent months to treat him or release him on health grounds, he did not receive the necessary medical care. 

Releases

Release of Yehya Khafagy 

On 13 January 2024, Alexandria Criminal Court ruled to release Yehya Khafagy on a bail amount of 1,000 Egyptian pounds. 

The crackdown of the Egyptian authorities on civil society organisations, human rights defenders and activists, media practitioners, journalists, bloggers, and political dissidents has dramatically worsened since the military seized power in July 2013.
