Cambridge Community Church: God is Close to the Brokenhearted

Doug Loveday was the interim pastor at Cambridge Community Church (CCC) after the sudden death of David McClurkin, their beloved preaching pastor. During his one-and-a-half years with the church, Doug did most of the teaching, as well as pastoral care and coaching with young leaders. “His role brought a lot of stability in our teaching pastor position. It’s hard for a church to maintain any direction if it is just random people in the pulpit,” says chair of the elder board, Drew Fletcher. In addition to providing “top notch” teaching, Drew says Doug “likes to poke and prod and take you down paths you wouldn’t go down your own.”
Besides the grief over losing Dave, the church also had to work through conflict. To top it off, there was a transition on the elder team for various reasons. “In the last two years we went through a completely new board and new staff except for our children’s ministry team leader,” says Drew.
Doug and VMC Executive Director, Gord Martin, mentored some of the new elders and provided guidance whenever it was needed. Doug had been part of a search committee in his last church so he was also able to help with that.

“There was a great need for a focus on our strong and sovereign God. Psalm 34:18 says that, 'The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and He saves those who are crushed in spirit,’” says Doug. “You can’t rush a grieving process or a transition process. The congregation had to go through them. We all realized it was going to take time,” says Drew. The leaders at CCC sensed God’s guidance as they piloted the congregation through challenges. Though they had to go through the search process twice, In August 2013 they were pleased to call Daniel Fietje as their new pastor.
“I was glad to be part of the leadership team and the search committee as we moved through healing from grief and conflict. There seems to be healthy closure to the past, and a very hopeful expectancy in Christ, the Lord of the church, as CCC moves ahead,” says Doug.
