Jekka's Guide to Growing Vegetables
We love growing vegetables and we are pleased to be able to add a few of our favourites vegetable seeds to our catalogue.
Interestingly, the word vegetable, meaning a plant grown for food, was not derived until the 17th century. Previously edible plants were all known as 'Pot Herbs,' referring to the cooking pot over the open fire not, as commonly believed, that they are grown in a pot; for example, Pot Marigold and Pot Marjoram, thereby indicating the historical use of these two plants. It was only after plants started to be cultivated for both flavour and size that the term vegetable was developed, creating a new category of plants. Perhaps we should reclassify the vegetable aisle to the herb aisle?
In order to help you get the most out of growing vegetables Jekka has written a special blog on how to grow from seed. Don't forget Jekka's seed sowing video for some more of our tips.
Jekka's popular herb salad mixes are back! These were previously sold at the RHS flower shows and have, probably, been asked for ever since. We now have three salad mixes, each one can be used to make cut-and-come-again salad crops and are perfect to be sown now.
Jekka’s salad leaf mixes are selected from herb varieties that grow well together and provide interesting and tasty babyleaf salads which are ideal for the home or allotment. Click on the link below to see Jekka's salad herb mixes and seed collections.
