Staff Vaccination for Safe and Stable Schools

All school staff and volunteers must get COVID-19 vaccine

Eugene School District 4J is committed to the health, safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and community. Our priority is to safely bring students back to school full-time, and keep schools open and kids in classrooms throughout the school year.

Health and safety measures help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in schools and reduce the need for students to be quarantined away from the classroom.

Gov. Kate Brown announced this week that Oregon will require all public and private school teachers, staff and volunteers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Earlier this month, Oregon returned to requiring face masks in schools, and then to requiring face masks in all indoor areas statewide. These rules to protect school health and safety have the force of law.

The statewide rule requiring school staff to be vaccinated is still being written, so some details are unknown. What we know now: All Oregon school staff will need to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination by Oct. 18, but 4J may require it earlier. Exemptions may be made only for eligible medical or religious reasons. More than 80% of 4J staff already were fully vaccinated by spring 2021.

Additional Health and Safety Measures

Staff vaccination is an important layer in 4J's multilayered prevention strategies to keep schools safe for students and staff. Other layers include providing vaccination opportunities for students, requiring face masks indoors, maintaining physical distancing of at least 3 feet to the extent possible as recommended by Oregon education and health officials, continuing improved and increased ventilation, isolation and quarantine of persons who are ill or exposed to COVID-19, and requiring frequent handwashing.

As we return to school this fall, we must all do everything we can to keep our children safe, healthy and able to attend school. Together, we can protect our 4J students and staff while providing a full-time in-person school experience.

Vaccines Offered for Students Age 12+

Safe, effective COVID-19 vaccines are available free of charge

Everyone age 12 and over is eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19 now. Authorization of vaccines for youth under 12 is expected this fall or winter.

People who are not yet vaccinated can drop in to the weekly vaccine clinics held at Churchill on Wednesdays and North Eugene High School on Fridays, call your healthcare provider, or check the state’s Get Vaccinated Oregon website or call 211 to find a convenient vaccination location. All COVID vaccines are free of charge.

4J Online Learning—Apply By Monday

The district is offering two online options for families who prefer distance learning this fall, as we know some families are not yet ready to return to school in-person.

4J K–5 Connect• Elementary school: 4J K–5 Connect (learn more)
Classroom learning on a set schedule, with a teacher and classmates in an online classroom. Each school day will include a combination of real-time teaching and independent learning opportunities, including PE and music. The school day is planned to be 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. daily (1:45 p.m. early release on Fridays).

Eugene Online Academy• All grades: Eugene Online Academy (learn more)
Independent learning on a flexible schedule. Lessons are asynchronous, available on-demand. Students have regular check-ins with 4J teachers. A wide variety of courses are available, including Advanced Placement high school classes, but not special programs such as IB, IHS or AVID.

4J's districtwide online learning programs available this year are not connected to individual schools or special programs such as language immersion. However, students enrolled in 4J schools via school choice will not lose their seat and will be able to return to their school at the term change or next year.

Monday Deadline: Request Online Enrollment by August 23

If you want your student to learn online this fall, submit your request by Monday, August 23 at Requests received by August 23 will be accommodated if possible. Later requests may be accepted if space is available.

Priority is given for district residents, but non-residents may apply. The district will make an effort to provide all students in the same household access to online learning, if space is available.

School Supplies

No shopping list needed

In most years, elementary school families purchase school supplies—such as pencils, erasers, markers, crayons, glue and scissors—to bring to school at the start of the school year.

This year, there is no elementary school supply list to add to your shopping. The district is providing standard supplies to elementary schools for students to use at school.

For middle and high school students, follow information from your school about whether supplies are needed.
