Dear members,
It was a historic and emotional moment in our Legislative Council on Tuesday when the End of Life Choices (Voluntary Assisted Dying) Bill was passed unanimously, late in the evening.

DwDT and VEST (Voluntary Euthanasia Society Tas), as it was called many years ago, have been advocating for this change for a very long time.
Now terminally ill Tasmanians can look to the future with confidence in the comfort of knowing that they will not need to endure terrible suffering at the end of their lives. They will have a choice.

I thank all of you personally, as well as on behalf of the committee, for all your valuable support which has helped to bring this about.

DWDTas are hoping to have some input into the implementation process, as well as the review in three years’ time and I expect there will  be opportunities for community education. Also, we need to lobby the Federal Government to change the criminal code, so that all Australian states can have certainty re discussing VAD on “carriage services”.

I am sure I speak for everyone in expressing my very heartfelt thanks to Mike Gaffney and his team for the tremendous amount of time and effort they have put into achieving the successful passage of the Bill, as well as to Margaret Sing, who has done so much of the research which informed the deliberations on the various issues on this topic.

Also, as you were aware, DWDT supported the ‘marketing’ of this Bill through Jacqui & Natalie Gray of Your Choice Tas. We felt their media savvy campaign was hitting just the right note with all Tasmanians and that we should be one united voice on behalf of Mike Gaffney and the EOLC(VAD) 2020 Bill. A very successful strategy as we now know, and we thank Jac and Nat for their tremendous efforts.
Thank you again for supporting DWDTas and we would very much appreciate your ongoing support by continuing your membership, as our work is not yet done.
My very best wishes to all of you,
Hilde Nilsson
