THIS IS A BIT SPECIAL. ACTUALLY. THIS IS A LOT SPECIAL. NADIA LEE COHEN WANTED HER FIRST EVER PHOTO BOOK TO LAND WITH A THUD. IT DOES MORE THAN THAT. OPEN IT TO ANY PAGE AND FEEL THE EARTH MOVE. SIX YEARS IN THE MAKING. 100 PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN PORTRAITS OF WOMEN. A HEARTBREAKING WORK OF THEATRICAL AMBIGUITY.
The new IDEA book. The new gold dream. It doesn't look like a first book. It looks like a major career monograph. Which... is exactly what it is. Six years ago Nadia started making the photographs in this book. Now it is published. Today. Right here.
Georgia May Jagger in Nadia's hyperreal signature style. This is the first portrait in the book. It sets the tone for what is to come. And for also for what is about to be undone.
Because WOMEN is both hyper-surrealist pop iconography AND deeply moving. Naked in its honesty. Scarlett Carlos Clarke (above) photographed in Hampstead, North London. The pleasures and terrors of domestic comfort.
Niko Riam. Also photographed in London. Nadia is British by the way. Now based in Los Angeles. She has been interviewed about this book for Another Magazine. The feature is live now on this link.
Sunny side up. Jessie Andrews, San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles. Nadia addresses the nudity common to all the portraits in her foreword to the book.
“Regardless of their assigned character, the level of nudity is determined by whatever the individual personally believes it is to feel ‘unclothed’… This naturally differs between subjects; however, it is, perhaps, the most harmonising thread that injects a universal feeling of strength to these images. The most important character trait being that these ‘Women’ are not weak, they feel empowered and, in turn, empower.”
Bryce Anderson, Brooklyn, New York. On the concept of 'women', Nadia adds:
"The word ‘Women’ in this case is an idea related to ‘character’. It doesn’t reside in the world we live in, nor does it share the same politics, beauty norms or values. It stands as a representation of strong femininity within a series of these 100 mises-en-scêne.”
The mise-en-scêne with Charli XCX. It is hardly a suprise that as Nadia worked on the photographs for her book, her career as a director took off. Every one of the pictures is a 'picture' in the old Hollywood lexicon.
Nadia at her narrative best. You can ask yourself. What was she (Charlotte Rutherford - the model) thinking? What was she (Nadia Lee Cohen - the photographer) thinking?
This is Nadia. A self-portrait. And as a character in her own photographic fiction.
Flo, Bethnal Green, East London. Classic already and the book is only a few hours old :)
This is it then. A major monograph to end 2020 with the full force of a massive meteorite. One hundred portraits of women in one gold cloth covered superheavyweight book. Texts by Nadia, Ellen von Unwerth and Italian Vogue's Alessia Glaviano. Copies are in Dover Street Market London, New York and Los Angeles today. Stores around the world in stock in the next week.

BACK TO THE BUY IT NOW! YOUR BLONDEY CHRISTMAS PART DEUX. THE NEW PHOTOZINE IS UNLIMITED EXERCISE. PHOTOGRAPHED BY ALEXANDRE PIRES AND, FOR THESE FIFTY FESTIVE IDEA COPIES AT LEAST, SIGNED BY BLONDEY.
The phrase belongs to Boris Johnson. Bestowing on the British public - not the freedom of the cities - but, even in lockdown, the open ended offer of 'unlimited exercise'. For all the pandemic words and phrases that made the Oxford Dictionary's 2020 list 'lockdown, circuit-breaker, support bubbles, keyworkers, furlough', 'unlimited exercise' was absent. We are glad to address that omission now.
The new zine is very Soho. Like a local picture newspaper for us.
Does also include some skateboarding. Golden Square actually looking a little golden on that corner too.
Photographs by Alexandre Pires. Scribbling on top by Blondey.
They are £10. As previously stated, we have fifty copies and they are all signed by Blondey. That makes Christmas easy.
