PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN. THE PLEASURES OF THE BOOTLEG LYRIC BOOKS. A SPECIAL INVESTIGATION. AND WITHIN THIS WORLD OF UNOFFICIAL TYPEWRITER ART, THE GREAT GREEK WORKS OF MUSICAL LYRICATURE. JOY DIVISION DARK WAVE AND, EQUALLY EXTRAORDINARY, RAMONES AND THEIR SONGS.
Awe and then some. It's hard to explain how great this book is. The lyrics to all the Joy Division songs in English and Greek translation but then so much more. It goes deep.
With the related imagery. Not just Charlotte Rampling in The Night Porter (visually riffing on the band's name most likely) but tiled on the page. Like winning a game of game of New Wave Windows 3.1 Solitaire!
Because, very likely, you always wanted to sing along to Εχει χάσει τον έλεγχο in English!
The lyrics are great and complete and may or may not provide an opportunity to ask 'Why is the bedroom so cold?' when checking in to your Santorini airbnb. But that's the not whole story. Becuase the art direction (as evidenced above) is off the scale of one to ten. It is a true superbook. And mega rare. Buy Joy Division Dark Wave on the button below.
New wave was always a UK versus US battle. But the Greeks took no sides. This Ramones and Their Songs book is every bit as brilliant as the Joy Division.
In Greek, The Ramones is Oi Ramones, which is possibly a more accurate translation of the sound. Of course, the whole idea of a Ramones lyric book is kind of unneccessary. Beat on the Brat doesn't exactly require an expert stenographer. Google's re-translation can't recapture 'brat' though... so 'what can you do'?
In case you were wondering, this page was printed with a spot colour. It has been hand drawn very nicely in red biro by a previous owner :)
We have one copy of this book (of all of these books) because they are otherwise totally unfindable. The button below makes this one yours.
NEXT. NO TRANSLATION REQUIRED. THE BOOTLEG LYRIC BOOKS BELOW HAVE BEEN TYPEWRITTEN IN ENGLISH, OR, AT LEAST, SOMETHING CLOSE TO IT. OBVIOUSLY THERE WASN'T A SPELL CHECK ON THE SMITH CORONA.
DAMN that is a fine drawing of David Bowie. Are his eyes different shades of grey? This book types up all the lyrics from the sixties start to Young Americans. Quick spot check on one of the trickier songs reveals an erroneous opening line, "So the store goes they wrote the clothes." But the world is asleep to our latent fuss and who cares if you spell 'Camelian' with a 'Ch' and an 'ion' or that the original album pressing (we have one on Depop) came with a lyric sheet. It is a wonderful book!
Umm... this is rare. The Pink Floyd bootleg Songbook. Starts with the piper at the gates of dawn and hits the wall. Produced in 1980 (we imagine - there is no date, ISBN, author or whatever on any of these). Hit the button below for sample pages (you can check them yourself!) and, of course, to buy this historic document.
