A LOOK BACK TO A TIME WHEN TECHNOLOGY WAS FRIENDLY AND LOVED US TOO. A VISUAL COOK BOOK OF GRAPHIC DESIGN. A FACE BOOK OF TYPE. AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY RIGHT NOW, THE LAST CHRISTMAS BOOK OF 2019. SHOP TODAY. AND IT SHIPS TOMORROW.
A book by Paris design house Ill-Studio. Photographs of analog and digital audiovisual recording kit assembled in the Gent studio of DEEWEE aka Soulwax aka 2manydjs aka Stephen and David Dewaele.
A few quick questions will establish if this book is for you...
Does that power switch turn you on?
Do your eyes widen at the Tinysizer?
Does this 1972 Arp Odyssey Monophonic Synthesizer make you think of A) Dieter Rams, B) Dieter Rams, C) Dieter Rams?
At this point it may be worth noting that this is a very ANALog book analogous to lining up all the food in your fridge so the labels face out. The great thing about Christmas being that you don't have to admit to being that person, you just need to know someone who reads barcodes for pleasure and gift this book to them.
BTW this catchall group includes every graphic designer, vinyl record collector and architect on the planet - some of whom are even women!
It's audio and it's visual. Still watch television? You can make your own with this Grundig FAC 71 Tube Camera from 1976. Nothing to do with Factory Records - although, curiously, FACT 71 is a video cassette.
There are over 275 pieces of kit photographed in the book. Multiple Moogs, Korgs, Rolands and a Mellotron. Best name goes to the 1973 modular synthesizer - LOUDEST WARNING PAPERFACE SERGE M.S - no idea what it does but we want one. A lot of this stuff is VERY RARE and EXPENSIVE. But the 1985 Disco Robo looks good value here on eBay.
Fortunately the book is NOT RARE yet. It was published yesterday. It is not EXPENSIVE yet either at £32. And - here's the last Christmas book special notification - buy it today (18th or very early on the 19th) and it is ships worldwide for the holiday.
Miss that date and you can still try Dover Street Market London (now) and DSMNY, DSMLA and Ginza (soon).
But let's just buy now / ship tomorrow and be very happy next Wednesday :)
Arrived today! The original actual very scarce first edition of the Dick Jewell Found Photos book. September 1977. 500 copies. This is number 366 and signed by Dick Jewell. And signed again with a dedication. A small book but a hugely important one.
