HOW TO SPEND IT! FIRST THE £10 T-SHIRT SALE AND NOW THE MOST AMAZING AND EXPENSIVE (EVER SO WORTH IT) BOOKS WE HAVE. ALLEN JONES' WAITRESS AND JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT PAINTINGS. SIGNED AND SIGNED AGAIN. THIS IS THE 3RD TIME WE HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT WAITRESS!!
Half bound in red Niger and hand made red marble covers. Not our usual explosive prose style but this is a special case. It is a special book. If we had to chose. We might well chose this. The archetypal superbook. Published in 1972. There were only 375 copies worldwide. Rarely seen. Barely seen. And beyond brilliant - obvs.
Allen Jones's then wife Janet. In a suit made by John Sutcliffe of Atomage infamy. There are twenty-four of these posed portraits interleaved between the other works. Time spent looking at them would not be wasted. They are beautifully composed.
Manzi's Restaurant, Leicester Square. Loved this restaurant - now sadly gone. The book does many things wonderfully well. One of them is remembering great, great British eateries from Rules and Boulestin to the Wimpy Bar on Villiers Street and a British Rail Dining Car.
Mike's Cafe on Blenheim Crescent, Notting Hill. Shot by the great interiors photographer, Tim Street-Porter. First time we saw the book, we thought they were real. Pre-Photoshop. These are very good composites indeed.
We are not sure how this is possible but google "Allen Jones" "Tim Street-Porter" and "Waitress" and you won't find much other than the images we shot from the last time we wrote about this book. How something so SUPERGOOD can not be online is just amazing. Amazingly good, to be honest - real life has real surprises.
The book is completed by a signed Allen Jones lithograph. A woman sitting on a chair that's not there. That's more an observation than art criticism btw.
Buy the book on the button below. Be ready for a big price (although we can go bigger on Allen Jones - see here). We have just the one copy and it is the only copy currently offered for sale anywhere in the world. Where scarcity and world class quality meet - on the button below.
PAINTINGS. SIGNED BY JEAN-MICHEL BASQUAIT! AND THIS IS THE SECOND TIME WE HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT THIS BOOK. IT ONLY EVER GETS BETTER. AND MORE VALUABLE. DON'T BLINK TWICE. YOU WILL MISS IT.
Basquiat's painting of the great jazz drummer Max Roach makes for the most brilliant cover. The whole book is super charmed.
And it is signed! The book was published in 1985 in an edition of 1000 copies. They were all signed by Basquiat and numbered.
Of course the paintings are great.
And this tryptch on the fold out pages is extra specially extra great!
Opposite the signature page, the wonderful photographic portrait by Jeannette Montgomery. It is so very good this book. Just imagine being gifted this signed Basquiat for Christmas...
