NEWS & UPDATES
We're pleased to report that the Assured Alliance Amazing Maasai Ultra marathon was held last month, with 236 runners achieving fantastic results in both their race times and fundraising efforts.
The race grew in size this year, welcoming more than 70 international participants as well as local Maasai runners to run either 75km, 42km and 21km across north-west Kenya’s high-altitude terrain. We notched-up the excitement of the start-line this year too, with the presence of a Canadian TV crew filming from above in a specially-chartered plane. Stay tuned for news about when their show goes out early next year...
In-keeping with the name of the event, the times achieved by our winning Maasai runners were indeed AMAZING: The winner of the 21km race was Maasai local, Lotarakwai Kekurusi, who stormed in at 1:15, while 15-year old Samina Lekilit, who ran in a dress and barefoot, won the women’s half marathon in just 1:43. Kairuki Daniel blazed into first place in the hilly, high-altitude 42km marathon with a stunning time of 2:25, and Victor Wachira Miano completed the 75km ultra marathon in the record time of 4:57.
Our international runners had a lot to be pleased about too, many of them running farther than they had ever run before (it’s inspiring, running next to the Maasai!). 13-year-old American Winter Vinecki placed third in the women’s marathon, a fantastic achievement undertaken to help spread awareness of prostate cancer, which took her father’s life, and raise funds for its research. You can also now find the race results on the site here.
Race Photos (Teasers)
We’ve added a first batch of photos of the race on our our Facebook page, with more to follow.
Stay tuned for news about Paul Ark's official TAMU 2012 photography book, which will feature the best pics of all our runners. Rumour has it that Year 2 of his book should be available to buy online around Christmas time (price including an inbuilt donation, of course)...
Fundraising Goal: SMASHED
So far, more than $36,000 has been raised through donations, sponsorship and proceeds from the race. Donations are still being welcomed, so we will hold-off announcing the final total for now, but the point is: a whole new intake of young ladies will be able to attend one of three high schools in the locale of the race, starting in 2013.
The girls who receive our 4-year scholarships will be selected over the next couple of months - we'll keep you posted on the whole process - so a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped us smash our fundraising goal.
Lastly, we would just like to express thanks to our sponsors, Assured Alliance and Temco Controls. Without their support, generosity and trust in us, there would have been no race and no new scholarships. We are incredibly grateful. Thank you, Mark & Maurice!
That's about it from us for now...
