Dear colleague,

The European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council finally reached a partial agreement on Horizon Europe. The Next EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, successor to Horizon 2020, is expected to launch on 1 January 2021 covering the period 2021-2027.

Despite the mobilisation of the science engagement field in the past years, there is no equivalent of the current ‘Science with and for Society’ (SwafS) strand in the new framework programme. The involvement of citizens in the co-creation and co-design of the R&I agenda has nonetheless been made one of the objectives of the programme by the EU Commission. Ecsite strongly supports this initiative, however, we have identified important gaps in the citizen involvement strategy as currently planned by the Commission, which is why we are inviting all science engagement organisations to sign an Open letter to the European Commissioner for Research and Innovation, Carlos Moedas.
In this Open Letter, Ecsite urges the European Commission to meaningfully engage with citizen and be more ambitious on science engagement. To do so, the Commission should rely on cost-effective actions led by experienced and committed science centres and museums and other science engagement organisations, all over Europe.

Support the Open letter

As numerous voices are always more powerful than one, we are urging all science engagement and research organisations to support this Open letter.

A simple step is required: fill in the “Endorsement form” and sent it together with the logo of your organisation, to Marie Couëdic at the Ecsite office by 21 June.

Ecsite reserves the right to refuse the signature of organisations that would not comply with Ecsite’s core values.

The essence of the Open letter

In this open letter, we suggest to the European Commission three communication objectives that would maximise Horizon Europe‘s relevance and impact:
  1. Enhance European citizens’ scientific culture
  2. Involve stakeholders and citizens in R&I priority setting
  3. Make the topics of the Missions the talk of Europe
Read the whole Open letter that has already been endorsed by 15 major science engagement organisations (as of 27/05/2019).

Don't hesitate to get in touch with the Ecsite office if you have any further question,
Together for a strong science engagement in Horizon Europe,
