EPA Inaugurates Office in Brussels

4 May 2015

For the past several years, EPA has been working towards the establishment of an office in Brussels to develop further networking activities with European institutions.

On 4 May 2015, this project became reality as EPA President Prof. Wolfgang Gaebel, joined by members of the EPA Board, inaugurated the opening of the office.

The office will be staffed by one full-time staff member, Mari Fresu - Scientific Officer, who will be responsible for the definition and implementation of a strategy and message towards the European Union institutions and for the development of partnerships with relevant organisations in the field of Health/Mental Health.

Accordingly, a "News from Brussels" section will now be included in each EPA Minds Online.

Health Programme - 2015 Annual work plan

The annual work plan 2015 for the 3rd Health Programme was adopted on 2 June 2015.

The EU health programme is the main instrument that the European Commission uses to implement the EU health strategy. It is implemented by means of annual work plans which set out priority areas and the criteria for funding actions under the programme. The total budget for the programme is € 449.4 million.

The call for proposals for projects under the 2015 work plan was published today, Friday 5 June 2015, and the deadline for submissions is set for 15 September.

Key documents are available here. For more information on the 2015 call for proposals for projects, please click here.

Commission launches ESIF for Health toolkit

As part of the project “ESIF for Health” co-financed by the EU Health Programme, a toolkit has been published to support Member States use structural funds more efficiently for health. An online platform has been launched to provide these tools to relevant stakeholders.

While health is a key sector for support under the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) for the 2014-2020 programming period, many health stakeholders in Member States may find EU funding mechanisms difficult to understand and navigate.

The ESIF for Health website presents information about funding opportunities for health, including the specifics of funding in the programming period 2014-2020, in a user-friendly way.

Special Eurobarometer on Cross-border Healthcare

The provision of cross-border health services and their coverage by national healthcare systems is a highly complex process, still surrounded by legal uncertainties.

A new survey on “Patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare in the European Union” was commissioned in order to assess the situation of cross-border healthcare after the enforcement of the related directive in October 2013.

The survey was primarily designed to:
  • Explore how many Europeans have received medical treatment in another EU country within the last year
  • Understand how willing they would be to do so, what their beliefs are and what they would see as the strongest barriers
  • Check how much they know about their rights – and particularly their entitlement to be reimbursed by national health authorities or healthcare insurers
The report of the survey and more information are available here.
