Our Interviewees: Sir Roger Bannister, first man to break the 4 minute mile, 1952 Olympian and 1954 Empire Games Gold Medallist (1 mile)

What's new with ALU?

Since we last spoke, we've been busy with our social media campaign promoting our current donation drive, working on the next draft of documents for presentation to broadcasters and others and opened our Official Store!

Not up with the latest? If you missed our last newsletter, you can read it in full by clicking here.

To catch you up on our news and bring you into the loop of what's happening now, here's a bit about what we've been up to these past couple of weeks ...

Interviewee Spotlight

John Landy, AC, CVO, MBE, Former Governor - State of Victoria

John Landy is the former Governor of Victoria, a 1952 & 1956 Olympian (Mile), 1954 Commonwealth Games Athlete (Mile) and the second man to run a sub-4-minute mile (three weeks after Roger Bannister broke that barrier in May 1954).  John and Roger would go onto compete against each other at the Vancouver Commonwealth Games on August 7, 1954 in what was touted by promoters as "The Miracle Mile" and "The Mile of the Century", watched live by an estimated 10 million North American viewers via television with radio providing live coverage for the rest of the world.  The end result would be Roger winning Gold and John a Silver medal - and both running yet another sub-4-minute mile.  Last week marked the 60th Anniversary of that famous race.

John's life post-Athletics saw him become a teacher, a senior manager at ICI Australia and an avid naturalist - writing two books on natural history.

While not coached by Franz, John worked with him at several coaching clinics (assisting with training for school children) and knew Franz socially and through their mutual connections in Athletics.  We thank John for his contribution to the documentary and for such a fascinating interview conducted at St Catherine's School.

To read more about John and his achievements, view his entry on The Sport Australia Hall of Fame website, here.

Behind The Scenes video sneak peek - "Mum's An Olympian"

Newsletter exclusive!

Sneak peek at some Behind The Scenes footage

We have been busy working on new content to release to the public for the documentary and you, our valued newsletter subscribers, get a sneak peak at the next lot of content - 24 hours ahead of everyone else - our first Behind The Scenes teaser: "Mum's An Olympian".

This snapshot from the "Making Of" documentary that is being shot (by Producer, Ben Steel) alongside the main film, covers the discovery that Director, Sally McLean made at age 15 - that her mother was a 1956 Olympian. The teaser features Sally, Marg Woodlock-McLean and Executive Producer, Bobby Galinsky and was directed, filmed and edited by Ben Steel.

Social Media campaign

How can you help?

One of our donation teaser images from our social media campaign
If you're following us on Twitter or Facebook, you may have noticed these images appearing on our social media feeds, usually poking fun at our Director, Sally McLean.  As Sally is the one generating them, she's luckily pretty okay with healthy doses of the self-deprecation style of humour (actively encouraged by Producer, Ben Steel - rather gleefully, actually ...).

But seriously, we're noticing that these kind of images are working well - having increased both our Twitter and Facebook followings and improving our retweet and "favourite" counts as well.

We're still working to get the word out about the donation campaign, so if you can follow or "like" us, share our updates and help spread the word, we would be very grateful! Or just send people to our official site: http://www.alifeunexpected.com/donate and we'll take it from there!

We have merch!

Our online store is live and kicking!

A promotional image for our online store going out on social media this week
We are very excited to officially announce that we have our very own online store after a soft launch last week to test the waters.  We have already sold a tote bag without even trying, so we are excited to see how this will play out over the coming weeks.

Sally's other job (her day job, in fact) is in t-shirt and product design.  So it made sense to utilize this other skill set of hers in service to the film.  And so our official Online Store has arrived, facilitated by Australian company, RedBubble (who also have bases in the USA and UK).
A quote on success from Co-Producer Marg Woodlock-McLean
Mainly a collection of inspirational quotes and sayings, there is also the odd filmmaking themed design and new designs are being added each week.  As well as tote bags and cushion covers (as seen in the images above), our store sells t-shirts, hoodies, tank tops, iPhone & iPad cases, Samsung cases, stickers, kids t-shirts and onesies, posters, cards and duvet covers (that's doonas for our Australian readers).

To check out all the designs on offer, go here.  And if you have some suggestions for designs - feel free to email us!

In conclusion ...

Thank you and a request

Thank you once more to all our supporters for all your help to date in getting this film done. Particular thanks to those who dived into old boxes, cupboards, attics, basements and other storage places to look out their photos and other memorabilia of their time with Franz.  We are still on the lookout for archive materials, so if you think you might have something somewhere that you'd be happy for us to film, scan or otherwise copy for use in the film - please get in touch!

And feel free to contact us if you have any other thoughts, ideas or suggestions during this current round of donation-raising - we'd be very grateful if you could spread the word to your friends and colleagues if you are so inclined - every little bit helps and you never know where the ripples in a pond might reach.

Until next we speak, take care and stay happy.
