Great Nutrition Resources

Tips & Resources for People During Cancer Treatment

Do you sometimes get questions from patients under treatment and you're not sure you have the most updated answer? Don't forget to check our DPG website for great answers to common questions! Questions are organized by treatment type. Here are a few examples:

  •  Is there a specialized diet recommended for people who have had the Whipple procedure for pancreatic cancer?
  • Is it safe to take antioxidant supplements during chemotherapy and radiation therapy? Does this concern extend to foods containing high levels of antioxidants, such as an orange or orange juice, which contain a high amount of vitamin C?
  • During treatment, I go back and forth between being constipated and having diarrhea, but nothing normal in between. Is there any food that can help both of these problems?
  •  Is there anything that can be changed in the diet to bring up white blood cell count?

Small Research Grant

ON DPG Small Research Grant Application Deadline 2/15/17

The ON DPG would like to remind members about a wonderful benefit and opportunity available to them.  For members or student members conducting research within the oncology nutrition realm, the ON DPG offers a small research grant (for up to $2,500) which will be given on a competitive basis.  Information regarding the grant qualifications and the application are available on the ON DPG website.  Examples of possible research topics might include cancer prevention, nutrition intervention or outcomes studies, or survivorship research.

Applications are due by February 15, 2017.  The scoring rubric and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) regarding the small research grant can also be found on the ON DPG website.   Any further questions may be directed to Heidi Ganzer DCN, RDN, CSO, LD at ganzerhl@shp.rutgers.edu.
After the deadline has passed, a panel of expert reviewers familiar with research will evaluate all submitted proposals.  The review process is anticipated to be completed within 3-4 weeks (after the deadline of 2/15/17).
