Child Nutrition Reauthorization Update
Senator Roberts (Kan.), Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, released this statement
indicating that child nutrition reauthorization negotiations have come to an end for the 114th Congress. The Academy and its members worked tirelessly to reauthorize these programs in the 114th Congress. We will continue to need your voice and advocacy as we look to protect the investments in the health of our children in the coming years. Congress to Pass Law Requiring RDN Expertise to Reduce Impact of Lead Exposure
The Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act (the WIIN Act), which is set to pass in Congress, provides critical investment in the country’s aging drinking water system establishes an Advisory Committee, which specifically includes dietitians. This Advisory Committee will review research and best practices on lead prevention with the aim of mitigating the risks of lead exposure for communities nationwide.
21st Century Cures Act
This week, the Senate is set to vote on passage of the 21st Century Cures package. The legislation includes funding for combating the opioid epidemic, investing in the Cancer Moonshot Initiative
, advancing research on brain disorders, understanding mental health issues, and ensuring that the FDA incorporates patients' voices into the decisions they make as they develop drugs.
Action Alerts Remain Open – We need a United Voice!
The National Clinical Care Commission Act and Treat and Reduce Obesity Act action alerts will remain open until December 16. We continue to need your voice on Capitol Hill! Please send the following message to your membership this week.
1. Support passage of the National Clinical Care Commission Act
which would give RDNs a seat at the table to ensure that federal programs provide the most efficient and effective care for individuals with diabetes and related diseases.
2. Support passage of the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act
which would effectively treat and reduce obesity in older Americans by increasing Medicare beneficiaries' access to qualified practitioners, such as RDNs.
