GP Upskilling in Mental Health
The General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) is a multi-disciplinary committee with representatives from general practice, psychiatry, psychology and the community.
The GPMHSC are responsible for setting the standards and accredits GP training and education in mental health. Mental Health Skills Training (MHST) programs (also known as Level 1 MHST) address the knowledge and skills areas associated with completing and reviewing GP mental health treatment plans.
Completion of these courses will give GP’s access to mental health MBS item numbers 2715 or 2717 under the Medicare Benefits Schedule (Better Access) Initiative. Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS) training further builds and develops skills in assisting patients with mental health illness and focusses on provision of evidence based FPS as part of a treatment plan for common mental health illness. It is a pre-requisite to have completed a MHST program and upon completion of FPS training accredited with GPMHSC, registration with Medicare can occur to access additional MBS item numbers: 2721, 2723, 2725 and 2727.
GPs who would like additional information regarding mental health training options or the work that GPMHSC do can contact GPMHSC on the following details: Phone: (03) 8699 0554, Fax: (03) 8699 0570 or Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
