Pima County Attorney’s Office Partners with Uber to Offer Free Rides
Through Memorial Day Weekend

Tucson, Arizona – Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall is pleased to announce a collaboration with ridesharing service, Uber, to provide a safe transportation alternative for Tucson residents during May.  As part of this collaboration, Uber will offer first time riders $15 off their first ride. Also this month, existing Uber users will have the opportunity to win two Uber trips worth up to $50 off each ride.

“Summer is quickly approaching, and during May many Tucsonans have much to celebrate, from Cinco de Mayo to college graduations. This May, the Pima County Attorney’s Office is again partnering with Uber to give a ride to Tucson residents so they can put safety first and celebrate,” said LaWall. The Pima County Attorney’s Office prosecutes thousands of drunk and drugged drivers in Pima County each year. And thousands more are prosecuted by the City of Tucson, Oro Valley, Marana, Sahuarita, and South Tucson.

MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) statistics show that two out of every three people are impacted by drunk driving; and, in 2014, 9,967 people died in drunk driving crashes - one every 53 minutes - and 290,000 were injured in drunk driving crashes. Drunk driving can affect anyone, not just those who choose to get behind the wheel.

“The Pima County Attorney’s Office is relentless in its pursuit to prevent impaired driving and will continually work to eradicate drinking and driving,” said LaWall.  “We are proud to partner with Uber in this effort to keep our streets safe.”

New users can access the free $15 ride credit by downloading the Uber app, setting up an account, and entering the promo code 2016Cinco.  Existing users can qualify to win two $50 Uber trips by entering the promo code WinCinco.  For every new user who signs up with the promo code and takes a ride, Uber will donate $5 to the Arizona Chapter of MADD. This free ride opportunity ends after May 30, 2016.

“We are very pleased to partner with the Pima County Attorney's Office to offer this safe and affordable transportation alternative throughout the month of May,” said Steve Thompson, General Manager of Uber Arizona. “We encourage people to take advantage of this campaign by making the smart choice not to drink and drive.”

“With everyone enjoying the beautiful weather, Cinco de Mayo holiday, and the start of the summer travel season, it’s more important than ever to plan ahead for a non-drinking designated driver if your plans include alcohol,” said Jason Frazier, MADD Arizona Program Director. “MADD is grateful to Uber and the Pima County Attorney's Office for their continued efforts for safer roads in Arizona. Joint efforts like these enable MADD to turn donations directly into lives saved by preventing drunk driving in the state.”
