Two of the Creative Hub’s top performers have made the shortlist for the New Zealand Book Lovers 2021 Awards. Eileen Merriman and Fiona Sussman, both graduates of the Thirty Week Fiction/Memoir course and now Hub tutors who have each published several novels, are in the running to win the Best Adult Fiction Book, alongside the likes of Tina Shaw, Nicky Pellegrino and Alan Titchall.
Addressed to Greta is Fiona’s comedic work about a reserved protagonist who upends her meagre existence on an international adventure. The judges called Greta "one of the most well-realised and endearing figures in recent New Zealand fiction".
The Silence of Snow is Eileen’s dark tale of a self-medicating anaesthetist and the rookie doctor who tries to help him, a story the judges called "a page-turning medical drama that puts the reader into the lives of young doctors".
Thirty Week Course student and freelance copywriter Katie Newton has been named second runner-up in the Sunday Star Times short story competition (which this year was won by Kirsten McDougall). Bigger Fish to Fry was also published in the paper where she was once on the editorial staff.
Her success brings to eight, the number of consecutive years Creative Hub graduates have been prize winners in New Zealand’s best known story award. This includes first, second and third prizes in 2018, to Fiona Sussman, Eileen Merriman, and Kathryn van Beek and first prize to Jill Varani in 2019.
Katie’s touching tale is told from the point of view of an 11-year-old boy facing lockdown alone without money, food or company. Judges Carl Nixon and Amy McDaid praised the story’s exploration of the difference between what the character understands and what the reader is aware of, as well as its amusing tone, writing, “What could’ve been unbearably bleak is made upbeat and often outright humorous.”
The competition has helped launch the careers of many well-known writers including Eleanor Catton, Owen Marshall and Sarah Quigley.
