Welcome to the June Edition of
Grampians E-news

A Message from the CEO

I’m excited to launch our brand new Partnership Prospectus for 2018/19. Partnerships are essential to the success of our region and by working together with local businesses we can create a greater impact. Our 2018/19 Partnership Opportunities provides businesses in the Grampians with cost-effective and well-managed opportunities to grow their business. The funds from these partnerships go directly towards tactical marketing activities that further develop and promote our region.
It has been another extremely busy month here in the Grampians, attending both the Wimmera Southern Mallee & Great South Coast Regional Partnership Assemblies and hosting lots of international travel trade and media visits. The two Regional Partnership Assemblies were attended by a number of key MP’s and Ministers and it was wonderful to hear that growing the “visitor economy” was a key priority for a strong and diverse regional economy - tourism is everyone’s business!
Our annual Tourism Conference was held in Greater Hamilton this month and with a focus on Innovation in Marketing was designed to help businesses build a marketing toolkit with practical skills that can be used to elevate their business. Our event attracted over 90 delegates, representatives from eight LG Municipalities and industry partners from across Western Victoria! Huge thanks to my team for an outstanding effort and thanks to all the guest speakers including Hugh Koch – MC for helping make our conference such an amazing success.
Grampians region featured on the global stage when cooking show MasterChef Australia filmed at Dunkeld’s Royal Mail Hotel this month. Celebrity chefs, food critics and contestants all arrived by helicopter and were joined by “local heroes” to showcase the iconic hotel's new restaurant, Wickens. The episode featured our spectacular destination and highlighted the culinary skills of Royal Mail Hotel executive chef Robin Wickens and head chef Dave Sullivan.
It is a fantastic time to be in tourism here in the Grampians and I am looking forward to further strengthening our relationship with local businesses and industry partners.

This view that never gets old! From the Mount William car park, it takes a moderately fit person approximately 45 mins to walk to the summit. Enjoy epic views of the surrounding mountains the entire way up. Despite the steep walk, the great views make it a must-see.

Grampians Tourism has been working with Alpaca Travel (no, they don’t own Alpaca’s!) to create inspiring travel content that helps the visitor in both their travel planning and their journey.  More than just ‘maps’, these interactive itineraries facilitate exploration, not just provide directions from point A to point B.

So what are they?  See our current examples here
. We are excited to be extending the content for 2018-19 with more engaging content and inspirational and experiential journeys, so stay tuned! We are busy creating content – with so many things to offer in our amazing region, we have almost endless possibilities.

Grampians Tourism has already put together a number of different travel maps, including adventure activities, waterfalls, walks, wine trails and more. With Alpaca Maps and you can share these maps on your website and social avenues with one simple click! The Grampians Peaks Trail is a world-class long-distance walking experience of 13 days and 12 nights that showcases the spectacular natural and cultural landscapes of the Grampians National Park.
Stage One of the trail, a 36km, 3 day - 2 night loop beginning at Halls Gap, passes up through the majestic canyons of the Wonderland Range, with stunning views and rocky lookouts including the Pinnacle. Passing onto the amazing newly constructed Bugiga overnight camp near Mt Rosea.  The trail continues down to mountain forests at Borough Huts and back to Halls Gap.

Stage Two is a series of trail sections under construction.  With upgrading track sections including Mt Staplyton in the north, the higher sub-alpine vegetation of the Major Mitchell Plateau near Mt William, and the rugged Mt Abrupt in the south.

The iconic long distance walking trail continues to take shape with preparation for the new section of the trail underway, and it is anticipated that new works will commence later in the year.  The designs for hiker camps along the trail are progressing with a number of design options being considered. Additionally, new visitation experiences are being investigated to provide a range of walking and sleeping options for the wider community. for trail details and for Grampians National Park access update.
