November in the Grampians sees the arrival of the Gariwerd season of Ballambar which represents butterflies, warm weather and wetland plants. We have a wonderful and rich Aboriginal story to share in the Grampians and it was enriching to be a part of the Australian Indigenous Tourism Conference earlier this month and discuss the opportunities for us to celebrate our indigenous culture from a tourism perspective. The conference was an excellent opportunity to connect with Traditional Owners, Aboriginal tourism operators and great to spend time with Jamie Lowe, CEO of Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation.

There's been more fantastic news for the region with the latest performance data from Tourism Research Australia's Visitor Survey measuring the positive growth we have all noticed anecdotally, you can read all the data in detail below. Grampians region travel data year ending June 2018.

Congratulations to Wickens at the Royal Mail Hotel who has been awarded 2 Hats in the 2019 Good Food Guide Awards, along with Regional Wine List of the Year.

Huge congratulations to Greg and Yvonne and the team at the Halls Gap Zoo who have run a very successful campaign to introduce a Rhino to their animal family and he is a beauty! A fantastic addition to Victoria's largest regional zoo in Victoria and an asset for the region.

It was wonderful to be a sponsor of the 2018 Western Victorian Wine Challenge this year in Ararat and congratulate local winners and celebrate with the Pyrenees winemakers for winning back the Regional Shield; the competition this year was fierce but the real winner is the Western Victorian WINE industry!

I'd like to welcome Rhonda McNeil, the new Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger in the Grampians. Rhonda comes to the role with incredibly valuable experience and we look forward to working closely together.

This week, I'm looking forward to presenting a tourism update at the Ararat Rural City Council Business Breakfast Forum in and excited to attend the RACV Tourism Awards Gala Ceremony on Thursday - good luck Team Grampians!

With the onset of summer heat just beginning it's a great time to explore the rich lakes and waterways in the region and we have some fantastic parks and camping options for visitors and locals alike to take full advantage of these natural assets.

Stay cool!

NOVEMBER 2018

Welcome Rhonda McNeil, Area Chief Ranger

Parks Victoria is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Area Chief Ranger for the Grampians. Rhonda McNeil brings a wealth of experience in land management, fire and emergency management, recreation, major projects and community engagement for DELWP and local government.

Prior to those roles Rhonda worked for over a decade with Parks Victoria, where she began her working life as a ranger. Rhonda and her team will play an important role in the day-to-day management and servicing of the Trail once it is opened to visitors in 2020. Thank you to Tammy Shoo and Mike Stevens who did great jobs as acting Area Chief Ranger.

The Grampians Peaks Trail will be a hike of 160km that can be experienced in sections or as one journey over 13 days and there will be options for all hiking abilities including full-facilitated walks and guided tours.

Stage One of the Grampians Peaks Trail, a 36km walk showcasing the spectacular rock features of the Wonderland Ranges close to Halls Gap, is a favourite with locals and tourists and offers a 3 day - 2 night hike starting at Halls Gap.

The first dedicated hikers camp ‘Bugiga’ is also a must see, with elevated timber tent platforms and an architecturally designed, award winning communal shelter. Nestled between Mt Rosea and Sundial Peak, it offers stunning views across to the Serra and Mt William ranges.
