Hi <<First Name>>,

In this week’s Living Lent study we focus on the resurrection of Jesus is the vindication and validation of his life and teachings.

Reading

Luke 24:44-49

‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.  And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.’

Reflection

A world full of injustice, and the pain associated with living in such a world, is not what God had intended when he created humans.  Humanity, in fact all of creation, was created to flourish in harmony and in relationship with the Creator.  That is why the resurrection of Jesus is so important.  It’s not just that it happened.  It’s what the resurrection of Jesus signifies and indicates concerning God’s intentions for His world.  The resurrection is God’s vindication and validation of Jesus, his life and his message.  The resurrection is the confirmation of God’s work of new creation, begun in the life and teachings of Jesus, restoring and recreating the world to the way it’s supposed to be.

That’s why, when Luke tells the story of Jesus and his resurrection, there’s a commissioning for participating in Jesus’ work of restoration.  In the reading we see Jesus showing his disciples how his story is the great fulfillment and climax of the drama of Scripture.  Following this, the disciples are sent into the world with power from on High, to proclaim the message of repentance and forgiveness, so that God’s healing work of restoring the world to the way it’s supposed to be can continue and help the world to flourish - as it’s supposed to!  The resurrection of Jesus means that the mission and message of Jesus must continue.  The resurrection indicates God’s continuing work of a new creation which those who follow Jesus are invited to co-create by living out his way of life and implementing his teachings into every facet of their lives.

Prayer

Victorious God, thank you for vindicating and validating the life and message of your Son, Jesus our King.  Thank you for giving us power from on High, so that we may participate in your work of new creation, implementing the teachings of Jesus, emulating the example of Jesus, under the guidance and inspiration of your Spirit.

Amen.
Thanks for coming on this journey with us. I hope you have a safe and happy Easter, and that you continue to reflect on the life of Jesus and the sacrifice he made for us.

Best,
Sean
