"REVEAL" BY KAREN PHILLIPS

Interview with Karen Phillips

1. Who are you and what do you do, and what is your background?
My name is Karen Phillips and I am a painter. I’m originally from California and have lived in Atlanta for nearly 13 years. While I have a degree in Business and have had careers in computer programming/analysis and graphic design, my calling is creating art. I started painting while recovering from a back injury in 2002. As a fledgling artist, my greatest support came from the Artist Conference Network, founded by the late Beverly Cassell.

2. What's integral to your art and or art career?
Music. I have to have music while I’m painting. It keeps my mind occupied while I have a conversation with the piece that I’m working on. I also love to experiment and learn new things, so books, museum visits, and meeting with other artists is important.

Methods for painting with encaustic medium are varied and the information available is improving for creating paintings. Through experimentation and testing, there are interesting discoveries and the technique continues to evolve.

Each Tuesday from 10:30AM to 1:30PM during the summer, I am offering independent study for artists at all levels and media to discover the process of painting with encaustic whether beginning to learn the process, continuing the process already begun, or pushing forward with a new series. The fee is $280 for a four-session minimum with three artists maximum per session.

Supplies to bring are heavy watercolor paper, wood panels, or Plexiglas, as well as any other material that you find intriguing for inclusion in a painting. Equipment and paint included in the fee. Ongoing individualized demonstrations and critiques.

My goal is to create an atmosphere for experimentation, inspiration and creative freedom.
