Mitzvah of the Week: Kashrut!

Whether you keep to the kosher dietary laws or not, there's something wonderful about studying them. It's not just about shunning the cheeseburger . . . there's so much more to it. For an overview of kashrut, follow this link. And then, check out this essay about kashrut in the Conservative movement.
Kosher Slaughter: A behind the scenes look at Kosher food preparation

A Message from Rabbi Chorny
A Short Guide to Spiritual Inventory

"Perhaps our most important preparation ritual is that which we do before the arrival of Rosh Hashanah. While we do not build or gather anything for this holiday, neither do we remove anything from our homes, our task is at least as arduous. For the month of Elul, leading up to the New Year, our tradition calls on us to take a thorough accounting of our souls (Cheshbon HaNefeshand return to our better selves (Teshuvah).

". . . How does one take a “spiritual inventory”? Our tradition does not offer a discreet list of character traits or behaviors that we can check off as we go about our days, so how can we know when we are on track or falling behind? There is no singular method for this all-important work, but we are commanded to engage in it. But how?"
