20th Anniversary Birthday Bash celebrates a History of Love for Lovers Key

Friday night November 17 the Friends of Lovers Key celebrated their 20th birthday as a Citizen Support Organization for Lovers Key State Park.  Architectural renderings and plans for the future Environmental Education Center at Lovers Key State Park were shared with guests, who toasted the past, present and future of the FOLKS in style at sunset.

The Fort Myers Beach news Island Sand Paper hit the highlights of the event in an article titled, "Lovers Key State Park Turns 20!"  They quote Pamela Jones-Morton, former president of the Friends of Lovers Key State Park (FOLKS) who provided a brief history: “Go back in your mind over one thousand years,” she instructed, “and close your eyes and just listen,” as waves lapped against the shore, complemented by gentle migratory bird calls just after sunset.

FOLKS member Mark Generales stessed, "... it is the combination of the place and the people, because the park would not exist if it were not for the people saying that this site is too important to be just another beachfront housing development…People are dedicated to Lovers Key State Park, not only because they understand what it needs, but appreciate what it provides us in return.”

Park Manager Robert Steiger told the crowd he feels the park's finest days are just ahead: “This time next year, the new visitor center will be under construction, and that will provide people a better understanding of Southwest Florida’s coastline ecosystem…Remember most visitors and even residents are not native Floridians, so it is crucial they know its history, as one of our missions is education.” See new renderings  of the Environmental Education Center at the FOLKS website.

Lovers Key on list of Southwest Florida great winter get-aways

Southwest Florida is home to some of the best winter outings in the nation. An article in The Naples News calls Lovers Key State Park, "one of the most popular beaches in Southwest Florida, regularly showing up on various top 10 beaches lists."

The article, titled Get outta' here: Places to get away from the usual holiday grind, names five Real Florida places to visit, saving Lovers Key (the best, we think!) for last.

Don't miss the first Songwriters at Sunset Concert of the season!
Thursday, December 7, 2017 4:00 pm

Friends of Lovers Key (FOLKS) has once again joined with the Americana Community Music Association (ACMA), to offer a series of monthly Free Acoustic concerts of all original music this season.

The concerts take place in the gazebo on the beach; seating is available for the first 80 people. Bring a beach chair for additional seating on the sand.

The first scheduled concert will feature four Florida musicians. Hank Woji and Eileen Kozloff have performed regularly at festivals, concert venues, coffee houses and house concerts throughout the country. They combine their stellar individual skills into a duo that showcases the best of their talents into a seamless collaborative musical team.

They will be joined by The Reckless Saints who describe their original music as “blue twangled folk & roll.” This delightfully diverse blend ranges from bluesy to ballads, jazzy to folk, bluegrass to rock, while still comfortably fitting under the Americana umbrella. Roy Schneider is a singer-songwriter in the grandest tradition of Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Guy Clark, and Lyle Lovett, but his voice, songwriting skill, stagecraft, and instrumental talent are all his own. With duo partner Kim Mayfield, The Reckless Saints have been touring for years across America and abroad.

The ACMA is a Fort Myers based organization that promotes local artists who write and sing their own original songs. Come hear great original music and the stories behind the songs in an intimate Songwriters Showcase.  The show will finish with a fabulous Lovers Key Sunset.

Refreshments will be available by donation and will benefit FOLKS.

Future Songwriters at Sunset concert dates are scheduled for Jan 4, Feb 1, Mar 1, and Apr 5, 2018.

“Wentletrap” are named for the Dutch word for winding staircase. In fact, the snails that create these shells are sometimes also called "staircase shells" and "ladder shells.

Wentletraps are in the class of Gastropod (snails)  and of the family Epitonlidae. There are about 630 species that inhabit all seas and oceans worldwide. The common species found on the beaches of Southwest Florida are the Angulate wentletrap. They are usually white, the main body has a whorl shape with about 9 thin distinct ribs that are angled at the whorlshoulder, like a spiral staircase.  The aperture is thick lipped and and oval shaped. The maximum size of wentletraps found in is Southwest Florida is 1”.

Wentletraps can be found on the beach of Fort Myers Beach but you’ll have to get down and look close at the sand because they are very small. Look for them in the tide lines, especially when you see what looks like “coffee grounds” washing in the surf.

Looking closely you will see other mini shells and once you see the first porcelain white wentletrap you will usually find more. There are a couple different wentletraps that may be found on our beaches including the brown-banded wentletrap that grows no more than 3/4” long and the “Humphrey’s” wentletrap that has a shorter appearance and rounded ribs verses the thin ribs of the Angulate.

Wentletraps generally live on sandy bottoms in a moderate depth of water near their food source of sea anemones or corals.  Females lay egg capsules that are held together with a supple string. The young will emerge as a free-swimming larva.
