Hazelwood Tornado Response

On April 10th an F2 tornado tore through Hazelwood and the surrounding areas, just north of St. Louis City. Many residents experienced severe tree damage and several homes were left uninhabitable. It wasn't long before a coordinated response was initiated by AmeriCorps St. Louis, the United Way and city officials.

Since our initial arrival in mid-April, ACSTL has been working to assess homeowner needs, clear debris, and provide tree service to those affected. ACSTL plans to provide services to the community throughout the upcoming weeks.

Clarksville Flood Relief

During the week of April 14th, 2013 heavy rainfall and melting snow threatened many parts of the country, in particular, the Midwest. As the Mississippi River began to rise the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) called upon AmeriCorps St. Louis (ACSTL) to travel to Clarksville, Missouri to assist in the flood fight.

On Wednesday April, 17th, 25 Members of the ACSTL Emergency Response Team deployed to the northeastern Missouri town of Clarksville, whereupon they immediately began constructing floodwalls, sandbagging, and establishing a volunteer reception center (VRC).

  • ACSTL City-Wide Service Team Members Chelsea Bodamer and Dave Culhane were both awarded the Missouri Service Award for their exemplary terms of service.
  • Community partner Faultless Healthcare Linen received the Partners in Service Award for their donation of laundry services to nine emergency winter shelters. Nestlé Purina also received a Partners in Service Award for their extreme office makeovers benefiting the community, including a renovation to the ACSTL office.

St. Louis Serves Day 2013

More than 150 community volunteers joined AmeriCorps St. Louis on Saturday, April 20th for the 10th annual St. Louis Serves Day. Serving alongside AmeriCorps Members and alumni, community volunteers served a combined 450 hours while completing “done-in-a-day” projects at 10 local nonprofit organizations. Projects ranged from interior painting at a home for autistic adults to gardening at an urban farm that provides career training for refugees. Even St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay, along with several of his staff members, showed up to lend a hand during the daylong celebration of service. Thanks to all who helped make Serves Day a success!
