$2,900 Raised at Share the Warmth

On Wednesday, November 14th community members, volunteers, alumni and friends gathered at the offices of AmeriCorps St. Louis (ACSTL) for the 3rd annual Share the Warmth, an open house benefit for our emergency homeless shelter. The evening featured a silent auction, raffle, games, and a chili cook-off. Generous attendees and sponsors enabled ACSTL to raise $2900 for shelter operations this winter! These funds will goes towards essential shelter needs, such as the cost of heating.

During the winter months St. Louis faces a shortage of homeless shelter housing. For the last two years ACSTL has partnered with the Winter Outreach Group in an effort to address this housing shortage by opening our doors as an emergency winter warming shelter when the temperature falls below 20 degrees. Our shelter is staffed entirely by volunteers and funded solely through charitable donations.

Hurricane Sandy Response

It has been nearly two months since Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast. Only days after the storm made landfall ACSTL members were on the ground serving in evacuee shelters and donation warehouses. Today, over a dozen Members are still on the scene coordinating volunteers, removing debris, and repairing damaged houses.

Look for a special edition Sandy e-newsletter in the New Year and, in the meantime, please consider helping those who are spending their Holidays helping others this season.

A Special Thank You to Community School

Last week, Community School in Ladue donated hundreds of gently used children’s books to ACSTL for redistribution to children throughout the City. The elementary school, which annually hosts a November book drive, collected over 2,400 books this year. ACSTL was among a group of five recipients that included Ready Readers, the Youth and Family Center of St. Louis and two St. Louis elementary schools.

We are thankful to Community School for their gracious donation and look forward to distributing these books to children in the coming year!

Volunteers Needed in Southeast Missouri

A year and a half ago, floods completely devastated areas in Southeast Missouri. While a lot of progress has been made through long term recovery committees, there is a lot of work that needs to be done in hope that families might be able to get back into their homes before Christmas. Volunteers are especially needed to finish up roofing jobs before the harsh winter weather rolls in.  A construction manager is in place through Catholic Charities to coordinate and lead volunteer teams in these projects.  If you can help out this holiday season, please call Heidi Boese at 573-481-0659 or e-mail.

Cold Weather Items Needed

There are many individuals throughout the City that will struggle to stay warm this winter. Please consider donating large winter coats, warm blankets and other cold weather items to ACSTL to be distributed to homeless throughout the City. Additional items needed include boots, underwear, long underwear and warm socks.

Items can be dropped off at ACSTL - 1315 Ann Ave. - Soulard - between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
