In advance of publication of the 7th Five Year Plan, policy makers and practitioners interested in eradicating extreme poverty will want to note the high level discussions captured in a 4 October Special Supplement produced by the Daily Bonik Barta.
The Supplement gives an account of a 9 August round table meeting in Dhaka at which the Planning Commission initiated discussions on ways to eradicate extreme poverty. The meeting was part of the Planning Commission's public consultations on aspects of its soon to be published 7th Five Year Plan.
Over 140 participants - including ministers, high officials and senior development practitioners - attended the event which was organised by the Extreme Poverty Research Group and the Daily Bonik Barta with support from the Rural Development and Cooperatives Division's EEP/Shiree extreme poverty programme, funded by UK aid DFID and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
The Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Planning, Mr. A. H. M. Mustafa Kamal, FCA, MP, was the Chief Guest. The Hon’ble State Minister, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Planning, M. A. Mannan, MP, was the Special Guest. And Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, Former Adviser to the Interim Caretaker Government was the Guest of Honour.
The round table was chaired by Dr.Shamsul Alam, Member (Senior Secretary), General Economics Division, Planning Commission and moderated by Mr. Dewan Hanif Mahmud, Editor, Daily Bonik Barta. Key discussant was Dr. Zulfiqar Ali, Head of Research and Advocacy at EEP/Shiree.
