Significant Conference on Eradication of Extreme Poverty in Bangladesh

The General Economic Division (GED) of the Planning Commission of Bangladesh, in collaboration with Bangladesh Bank and Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) organized an important conference “Towards Sustained Eradication of Extreme Poverty in Bangladesh” with the support from Department for International Development (DFID) and EEP/Shiree held at the NEC Conference Room, Planning Commission of Bangladesh on April 8-9, 2015.

The Honorable Minister, Ministry of Planning Mr. A H M Mustafa Kamal (Lotus Kamal) inaugurated the conference whilst State Minister for Finance and Planning, UNDP Country Director in Bangladesh and many others spoke and presented papers on the occasion.

Policy Strategy proposed by the Member GED of Planning Commission in the Extreme Poverty Conference:
  1. Extreme poverty eradication prioritised in the next Five Year Plan
  2. Greater budget allocation for extreme poverty eradication using National Social Security Strategy
  3. Achieve growth at 7% rate
  4. Scale up and expand successful targeted extreme poverty programmes like EEP/Shiree, CLP, TUP etc.
  5. Scale up and target more effectively Government Social Protection programmes
  6. Invest more in human capital development and ensure equality of opportunity in order to ensure the extreme poor become more resilient
  7. Consider ways of strengthening institutional capacity to support extreme poverty eradication initiatives (Permanent Secretariat in Planning Commission, perhaps at GED) to ensure state and society buy-in.

EEP/Shiree observed International Women's Day

EEP/Shiree observed the International Women's Day by organising a special countrywide courtyard sessions throughout Bangladesh. The aim was to project messages associated with the International Women’s Day 2015. In a carefully coordinated exercise by EEP/Shiree at around 11 o’clock (on March 8, 2015)  about 2,000 Community Pusti Karmis (CPKs) of 14 partner NGOs conducted special courtyard sessions with approximately 35,000 extreme poor beneficiaries in 85 Upazilas of 22 Districts.

Pre budget discussion with the Parliamentarians by APPG for extreme poverty

The All Parliamentary Party Group (APPG) on extreme poverty organised a pre-budget dialogue on "National Budget 2015-16: Expectations of the Country’s Extreme Poor Groups and the Role of Members of Parliament" in Hotel Sonargaon on February 28, 2015. To know more, click here.
EEP/Shiree CEO, Eamoinn Taylor, suggested Parliamentarians might wish to note that the Planning Commission had published a Background Paper on Extreme Poverty to inform the 7th Five Year Plan which was available here.

Govt. officials visited EEP/Shiree project

On March 27, 2015 the Honourable Additional Secretary of RDCD Mr A K M Badrul Majid visited Korail slum to see the work of Dushtha Shasthya Kendra (DSK), one of the scale fund NGO of EEP/Shiree project with many beneficiaries. He had main discussions with community groups and recommended the establishment of a 'Drop In Centre' for adolescent girls to learn vocational skills to boost their employability.
EEP Project Director Mr Bhabesh Chandra Podder visited partner NGO activities in Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts on 26 and 27 April 2015. During his visit, he inaugurated gender training for NGO staffs, observed Community Pusti Kormi (CPK) refresher training, met local government administration and talked to number of programme beneficiaries who received productive assets and skills from EEP/Shiree.

Sustainability discussion with the Scale Fund partner NGOs

EEP/Shiree organised a discussion session with Scale Fund partner NGOs on February 19 and 22. The purpose was to plan for the sustainability of gains made by beneficiaries as the EEP/Shiree supported programmes come to an end in 2015.

Refresher training on nutrition

EEP/ Shiree organised Nutrition refresher training for Nutrition Coordinators and Nutrition Officer cum master (NOMTs) of its 14 Scale Fund Partner NGOs. The aim was to reinforce previously acquired knowledge and skills.
