Celebrations and commiserations!

We've just passed the half-way mark for our current financial year. Read a quick update on how we've been performing in terms of our annual goals. Spoiler alert - we're meeting and exceeding most of our targets!

While there is much to celebrate, we also have to commiserate about the sad loss of the Mxit service. At the end of September, Mxit finally shut off its servers. While there weren't a huge number of FunDza readers left on Mxit, many of those that were still there were our highly dedicated users who had been reading with us for many years. We've got the contacts of many of them and are hoping that they will convert to reading our stories in other spaces. While many have converted (and hopefully more will still do so) , there are some who won’t be able to - simply because their phones are old devices that worked on Mxit but which aren't able to connect to our site, Android app or FreeBasics.com app.

So, we need your help!

We're looking for 20+ second-hand devices - preferably Android phones - that we can gift to these readers, together with a Cell C sim card so that they can find us via FreeBasics.com and carry on reading FunDza at no data cost in this space. If you have a handset that's gathering dust in a bottom drawer, please contact Shelley Bolle (shelley@fundza.co.za) who will arrange the best way of getting it to us or directly to the FunDza reader. Alternatively, if you are wishing to donate some funds to the cause - so that we can buy some cost-effective handsets for these users - please make your donation via PayFast or contact Shelley for our banking details. R500 would help us to buy a new device for one of our needy readers. Your assistance will go a long way to making a difference to the life of a FunDza Fan!

FunDza staff were kept on their toes in September with many travelling to different parts of the country to participate in a variety of literacy-related events, including National Book Week, the Open Book Festival, the Himeville Arts Festival and more. We also hosted our 'Words that Matter to Me' poetry competition and received hundreds of outstanding entries. Read our news below and check out our calendar to see what's on the cards for October too!
