Northern Brewer's Rebel Rye: Breaking the Mold With a Bold, Powerful Statement of Stubborness.
KEEPING ONE'S BALANCE
On Japanese Novelists and Exploding Livers

Every month for more than five years, beer bloggers and writers from around the U.S. and beyond have been participating in a little something called “The Session,” which I’d never gotten around to participating in until today. Lots of thoughtful folks have contributed their ideas over the years (Stan Hieronymous, Jay Brooks, Tomme Arthur, Pete Brown, etc.) and I’d encourage anyone with a beer blog (or newsletter, apparently) to peruse the content and consider participating. By doing this one basic step you’ve already proven yourself to be far savvier a blogger than I ever was, and at the core of things it’s a noble conceit: instead of just emphasizing your own vantage, you include it with others around a common topic to make them all a bit more valuable.

(Kind of like… oh, I don’t know… RateBeer?)

April’s topic is “Finding Beer Balance,” particularly one's personal balance. As someone who (barley) manages to piece together a living by writing about beer and would very much like to continue doing so, I can't help but think about the habits of writers like Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami (The Wind-Up Bird ChroniclesKafka on the Shore, 1Q84, etc.), who chose to take seriously the notion of committed novel production: by running marathons, sticking to disciplined fitness and writing schedules, and just taking himself seriously as a living, breathing, fragile human being who loves what he does and wants to continue doing so for a very long time.

That’s certainly a crucial part of it (particularly in terms of remaining-reasonably-shaped-and-not-having-my-liver-explode concerns: taking multiple days off each week, limiting my overall intake, liver squats, etc.). Regardless of where one fits into the beer industry, we’re all better off living like we’re in this for the long haul. At the end of everything, though, finding one’s balance is also far more than surviving well. It’s about doing that initial legwork of discovering something we can really dedicate ourselves to, even when things suck (and they will). That’s often the hardest part: finding that point of interest that keeps one feeling fully alive, emboldened enough to make those sustaining sacrifices, and sufficiently fired up about what lies ahead to realize that finding a healthy balance early on matters. I gotta say, craft beer seems to provide that persistent, fiery impetus for a whole lot of people these days.

Oh, and a touch of goofy-ass levity never hurt either. (Gold star to anyone who noticed the barley switch.)
