* WELCOME *

Fall is definitely here. The leaves are falling, the days are shorter and the air much cooler. Many of us will soon be gathering together to enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving Day meal with family and friends and taking time to reflect upon our many blessings. In this newsletter we would like to reflect back on some of our most recent past events. I hope you enjoy the accompanying photos and you can visit our website for even more photos.

On behalf of the Board of Officers, I would like you to know how grateful we are to all of you who continue to participate, volunteer and support our chapter events. I would like to thank those of you who took the time to come to one of our board meetings with well-prepared and interesting presentations for our consideration. (If you would like to attend a board meeting, please contact us, but keep in mind that only the board members present can vote.) Of course, we also want to thank you for your generous donations to our designated charity, Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence.

As we enter the holiday season, please continue to visit our website and our Facebook Group page. Be sure you're on our mailing list so that you receive upcoming newsletters and special event alerts.

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Dancing!

Safiyah, President

Reflecting upon our most recent past events ...

Sunday, August 11, 2013 - SF/BA MECDA teamed up again with PALOMA, owner of Lunatic Fringe, for Swapportunity, a Super Swap 'N Shop Sunday! Under the tents lining So. Murphy Street in Downtown Sunnyvale were bargains galore -- all those gently-used items just waiting for a new home! Shoppers and sellers alike could also take 1 or all 4 of the FREE belly dance workshops. The teachers who generously donated their time and talent were: NATIKA, PARRI, RAWIYAH and SABIBA. There were plenty of snacks and if that wasn't enough, there was opportunity to win a fine prize. Swapportunity was once again a successful event and fundraiser. Thanks to PALOMA who made it so easy for us to coordinate this popular event and thanks to all who attended, (See photos below.).

Sunday, September 15, 2013 - Return to the Casbah - By popular demand, a benefit for SF/BA MECDA and Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence, returned to the Village Kebab Restaurant in Los Altos for another Dancers' Night. This time we enjoyed an intimate indoor setting with sumptuous food and dazzling performances by ADRIANA, BASINAH, LULU, PALOMA, RAJA, RAWIYAH, SETAREH, SUDEEP, TATIANA and ZELINA. Also back by popular demand, HAZAR entertained the audience with a lovely Dancing for Donations routine to benefit Next Door. All the dancers performed to a packed house with many guests standing in the aisles. It was at this event that our Board of Officers chose to present PALOMA with a Certificate of Appreciation for her Dedication and Contrbutions to the Bay Area Belly Dance Community. PALOMA had recently announced that after some 8 years she was relocating her business to Chico. (See photos below courtesy of Alisha Westerfeld.)

MEMORIAM message delivered by Leyla Lanty, Vice President, SF/BA MECDA.

"The San Francisco Bay Area belly dance community mourns the loss of long time belly dancer, teacher, event sponsor and dear friend, Saiqa Kathy Menniti Fiato who passed away on September 20, 2013 after a long, hard, well-fought fight against breast cancer. We have lost a talented artist who was always ready to share her wry humor, her dance technique and style and her performance experience and advice with everyone. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her."
