Uitsonderlike melkbeeskuddes ontvang Elite-toekennings

Consecutive fuel price hikes may hit consumers the hardest

Paul Makube, senior agricultural economist at FNB AgriBusiness, on 30 April said South Africa’s agricultural sector has powered relatively well after the devastating drought two years ago, helping the country avoid a recession in 2017 and assisted in taming inflation with robust output. Apart from favourable production conditions across the country, except for the Western Cape, the sector benefited from relatively lower Brent crude oil prices and a stronger exchange rate because of their effect on agriculture input costs such as fuel, fertilisers and pesticides.

These dynamics have since changed with an upswing in international Brent crude oil prices to near three-year highs at US$74/bbl and the rand weakening to R12,35/US$ early last week.

Although the cost of distributing produce across the country is still highly dependent on road transport, the impact of high fuel prices will be mitigated by the fact that most producers normally purchase diesel in advance. The net effect of fuel increases is reduced profit margins for producers as input costs increase over the long run.

The consumer will be hardest hit as disposable income is eroded by consecutive fuel price increases while the daily cost of transporting, packaging and distributing food will eventually be passed on.
Managing costs that don’t impact production

Milk producers are constantly trying to find ways to tighten their belts by evaluating all the aspects of the farm’s budget. For advice on operational aspects that could be removed or reduced without sacrificing herd health and productivity, click HERE.

Suksesvolle boeredae in Noordwes

#SACheeseFest a huge success

The 17th South African Cheese Festival held over the long weekend was a huge success with almost 30 000 people attending the popular celebration of cheese and this diverse dairy product’s culinary companions. Boutique and commercial cheeseries from across the country annually bring more than 20 tonnes of cheese to the festival. According to Johan Ehlers, chief executive officer of Agri-Expo, organisers of the festival, Agri-Expo and the exhibitors were both surprised by the strong buying power at this year’s festival, especially with consumers facing economic challenges.

Several new boutique cheeseries, including Vredesberg, an empowerment project from Kareedouw, exhibited for the first time thanks to the support of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture (WCDoA) and Absa. Agri-Expo also joined forces with the WCDoA for the Cape Made: Taste the Alternatives project to enable smaller producers and entrepreneurs to showcase their alternative niche products such as pomegranates, honey and mushrooms – all the perfect cheese companions. Press release. Click HERE to read more.

Vredesberg boutique cheesery was first-time exhibitors. Ruby-Ann Sampson, Monica Banda, Karen van der Merwe and Geraldine Hendrickse manned their stall at the SA Cheese Festival.
Best way to deal with hypocalcemia

Introducing the “Legenda(i)ry” board game

The MPO Training Institute is excited to introduce the Legenda(i)ry board game, which is an alternative training method based on the Dairy Standard Agency’s Code of Practice for Milk Producers. Legenda(i)ry was developed with the aim of training farmworkers to maintain the integrity of the milk on the farm effectively and to manage the supply chain correctly. The board game engages the participants in dairy standards for product composition and food safety, animal health, animal feed, dairy parlour hygiene, transporting milk, processing facilities and conservation. The MPO plans to give an award to the best dairy farm team based on the results of the board game at the end of 2018.

The Dairy Mail May – The power of 5

Five may be my new favourite number! This month’s issue is all about the power of five, and we will be exploring this number from every angle. In the stewardship pillar, it’s all about the five pillars of stewardship: environmental stewardship, animal welfare, social awareness, producing a healthy and safe product, and profitability. Thereafter we will move to the top five financial ratios you should be checking and five technological trends you should be aware of. On the farm we will explore five diseases that should be on your radar and how to manage them. On the processing side we ask milk buyers what the five things are your milk buyer wishes you knew. Finally, we compare the big five dairy countries and look at their strengths and weaknesses. This is also the Nampo issue, so don’t miss out!

Doen dit reg en wins sal volg

 Celebrating stewardship in South Africa

After the successful launch of The Dairy Mail Stewardship Awards in 2017, The Dairy Mail is again inviting nominations for 2018. In keeping with the strategic goal of the MPO, sustainable dairy farming for everyone, we believe that good stewardship should be recognised and rewarded. If you know a dairy farmer who is the epitome of a good dairy steward, nominate him or her in the second annual The Dairy Mail Stewardship Awards competition.
Nominated farmers should excel in at least one of these areas:
  • Are they good stewards of the land?
  • Do they produce milk that is healthy, wholesome and safe to drink?
  • Are animals and humans on the farm treated with care and consideration?
  • Are they running a profitable dairy business?
To enter, complete the entry form and submit your nomination to the editor at robyn@agriconnect.co.za by 31 May 2018. There will be a judging process, including a farm visit, and farms will all be judged on the MPO 3P Metric. Nominated farmers will also receive feedback based on this report in order to further improve their sustainability efforts. The winner will be announced at the annual MPO gala dinner and receive a five-page spread in the December issue of The Dairy Mail (valued at over R60 000). To read more, click HERE.
