We think this jubilant extravagance is also representative of our commitment towards an inclusive society and our Diaspora

Poster Story

Artist, TSAFF poster 2019

We asked Rina to share a little bit about herself and her inspiration behind this year's TSAFF poster.
What was your inspiration behind this artwork?
My inspiration for this artwork are two festivals in India - Holi - festival of harvest celebrated with colors and the second is Navratri in Sep/Octo (nine days of festival are filled with music and dance- devoted to the goddess Shakti)  I love both, but my favorite is Navratri as it so essentially Indian - dance and music, when combined with the colorful saris twirling around you get a kaleidoscope of colors.

What was your thought process during the making of this painting?
I wanted to convey the feeling of India, the complexity and the vibrancy; which I, "saw India for the first time" thru my kids' eyes when I took them to India.

How do you usually create your art, do you have an end image in mind, or is it more of letting it develop on its own?

I am an intuitive painter, I set an intention, so that I have a general idea and feeling I want to convey in my paintings, but then I let go of the control and let the painting tell me where it wants to go. Once I feel that I have achieved the intention and feeling I know the painting is done.

Can you tell us a little bit about your journey as an artist?
I dreamt of two things I wanted when I was young,  one was being a mother and second be an artist.  I didn't study art in the college, I have a degree in Accounting, a Masters in Economics and an MBA in International Business.  When my kids were 4 yrs old I told them that they can be anything they want in life and my one son asked: "mama what do you want to be when you grow up?"   Well, I was grown up so I decided to start painting and I have painted every day since then, and I am fulfilling my dream, and it had has been a wonderful journey and I feel whole now.

Tell us a bit about your experience with Tasveer.
I think Tasveer has done excellent work in giving south Asian filmmakers a platform to showcase their work, and I have enjoyed many movies over the years.  I was very honored to be chosen to create art for Tasveer's India year.
