Relationships and happinessLiz Dore

People are healthy and happy if they eat, exercise and have friends.  Those who are also in a positive relationship are generally more content.  People with disability are often not encouraged to form intimate relationships, yet in my experience those who have a girlfriend, boyfriend or partner are happier and less vulnerable to abuse.

The Friendship Skills workshops and
Date-ables dances (see below) are good opportunities for single people with disability to meet other singles.

Have a look at the new, revised 2014 edition of my Healthy Living Checklist for adults. The last section now includes "relationships with partner and/or self". This is a useful guide to help set personal goals for 2014 and for the future.

Liz recommends this movie

Adam was in cinemas a few years ago, but is currently available on DVD.  The main character, Adam, is a young man with Aspergers.  He gradually gets to know and develops a relationship with a women he meets from a unit in his building.  The movie shows different steps in developing a relationship from introduction, getting to know each other, discussing disability, sharing interest and being affectionate.  The couple do break up towards the end, however, this is a reality for most young people in their first serious relationship.  Watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnoNQa_qUm4
